“…The main characteristics of the included studies on atopic disorders are summarized in Supplementary Table S1 . There were 20 prospective [ 30 , 50–52 , 57–61 , 63–65 , 69 , 70 , 72 , 74–78 ] and 11 retrospective [ 53–56 , 62 , 67 , 68 , 71 , 73 , 79 ] studies with publication periods ranging from 2005 to 2020 and baseline study periods ranging from 1959 to 2018. The number of participants varied greatly, from 198 [ 61 ] to 792,130 [ 68 ] children.…”

“…3,4 A host of additional studies established that in addition to the findings noted above, absence of early antibiotic exposure, exclusive breast-feeding for the first 4 months of life, vaginal delivery, furry pets in the home during infancy, lack of maternal antibiotic use during pregnancy, and maternal animal exposure during pregnancy all were associated with lower rates of allergic disease. 5-9 Taken together, these clinical observations established a strong link between microbes and the development of allergic disease.…”

“…Although the intestinal microbial community does not stabilize in humans until about 3 years of age Yatsunenko et al, 2012), the precise age of the critical window in infants is not yet clear. Antibiotic use during the prenatal period or the first years of life is associated with an increased risk of asthma, allergic disease, and atopic dermatitis (Marra et al, 2009;Martel et al, 2009;Murk et al, 2011;Raciborski et al, 2012;Risnes et al, 2011;Stensballe et al, 2013). The microbiome is also implicated in susceptibility to T1D (for a review, see Paun et al, 2017).…”
