Original Citation:Post-traumatic growth, distress and attachment style among women with breast cancer AbstractWe investigated the level of Post-traumatic growth (PTG) and its relationship with clinical and psychological variables in a sample of 108 females breast cancer survivors. The data were collected through the PTG Inventory, the Relationship Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Distress Thermometer. Women with higher depressive symptoms presented lower levels of PTG than women without. Moreover, women who had undergone combined treatment presented higher levels of PTG than women who had not. In conclusion, the presence of depressive symptoms in the follow-up period was found to negatively interfere with the possibility of developing psychological growth.

Parental upbringing may affect their offspring’s mental state across the entire lifespan. Overprotective parental child-rearing style may increase the disease burden in the offspring. Furthermore, this child-rearing style may also play a pathogenetic role by transmitting trauma- and stressor-related disorders (TSRD) across generations. Studies with animals have demonstrated that the mother’s immediate and expansive protection of the newborn decreases the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) axis activity in the offspring. However, few studies have investigated how stress impact humans raised in an overprotective manner. In a cross-sectional study with 40 healthy students recalling their overprotective upbringing, we show an increase in the dehydroepiandrostendione (DHEA) concentration and a reduction in the cortisol/DHEA-ratio in hair. Additionally, this child rearing style was associated with heightened indications of mental burden, depressiveness, and sense of coherence. Our results provide insight into the roots and consequences of psychological trauma across several generations. Further investigations focusing particularly on multigenerational transmission in extremely burdened families will augment our results.

Disasters, whether natural, man-made, or technological, all have the potential to affect psychological health, including the onset of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Several theories have been presented to explain the development of, and recovery from PTSD. This paper considers the possible role of adult attachment in the development of PTSD symptoms after natural disasters. Attachment style is formed in childhood through infant interactions with their primary caregiver. An adult's attachment style is thought to be founded on the beliefs, expectations and feelings that they learnt as an infant with their caregiver and includes secure, avoidant, anxious/ambivalent and fearful attachments. Various mechanisms of how attachment style relates to PTSD symptoms have been proposed. Research has consistently shown that secure attachment is negatively associated with the subsequent development of PTSD and insecure attachment is associated with higher PTSD symptoms in a variety of adult trauma victims. However, none of these investigated samples have experienced a natural disaster. Also, despite an increasing number of studies considering the relationship between attachment and PTSD symptoms, results are mixed and often difficult to compare, first of all, because linear statistical approaches were used. The aim of the study was to present theoretical background for the development of the generalized multiplicative model (GMultM) for predicting PTSD after natural disasters with attachment styles as predictors.
