The relationship among resilience, rumination and posttraumatic growth in hemodialysis patients in North China

Abstract: Research has indicated that clinical serious disease may lead to posttraumatic growth (PTG). However, little is known about PTG among hemodialysis (HD) patients. The study examined the relationship among resilience, rumination and PTG among Chinese HD patients. 196 HD patients were recruited from a tertiary hospital in a Northern city of China between 1 June 2015 and 30 May 2016. “…Rumination is known to mediate the relationship between mental health and sleep quality [ 39 , 68 ]. Studies of young adults and college students reported rumination mediated the relationships between depressed mood and stressful life events on sleep quality [ 39 , 68 ]. These studies agree with the findings of the present study in that increased rumination could explain why perceived stress, anxiety, and sleep quality were negatively correlated among university students.…”

“…Unlike rumination, higher levels of psychological resilience (referred to as resilience from here on) characterized by the ability to quickly recover from a stressful event, are associated with the ability to better manage stress [ 35 , 36 ]. Several studies suggested that resilience can reduce the adverse effects of stress on mental health and sleep [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 ]. Individuals with higher levels of resilience tended to cope better with adversity, and resilience served as a protective factor against negative psychological outcomes such as stress, depression, and anxiety [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 ].…”
