The relationship among pre and post slaughter traits of American Bronze Turkey

Abstract: Abstract. This study aimed to investigate the relations among the pre- and post-slaughter traits of American bronze turkeys. Birds were raised under three different lighting regimes. Pre-slaughter traits were measured when the birds were 15-, 20-, and 30-weeks of age. Canonical correlation analysis showed that as the birds aged the relations among the pre- and post-slaughter characters became more pronounced. Coefficients of determination (R2) were 63.6-82.8% when pre-slaughter characteristics were measured at… Show more

“…Many studies have investigated the relationship of different body measurements with body weight or slaughter weight (Wahid et al, 1975;Yamani et al, 1982;Abdellatif, 1999;Goswami et al, 2000;Latshaw and Bishop, 2001;Mendeş et al, 2005). In such studies, the relations between body weight and some of the body measurements have been discovered and the results have been used in estimating future steps.…”

“…Information on correlation among the pre and post-slaughter traits is quite important in poultry breeding. This is because knowing which of the pre-slaughter traits affects which of the post-slaughter traits enables the breeder to predicts what kind of products to obtain at the end of breeding programme (Mendes et al, 2005;Mendes, 2009;Yakubu and Idahor, 2009). Size and shape of various parts are the major determinants of the overall size and shape of the live bird or carcass.…”

“…Local turkey is becoming few in Nigeria and are predominantly the bronze-black type raised extensively (Oluyemi and Roberts, 2000). The main purpose of animal breeding practices is to improve traits of economic value (Mendes, 2005) and body weight is one of those important economic traits in the selection of animals. Fertility and hatchability are major parameters in reproduction performance which are most sensitive to environmental factors and genetic influence (Stromberg, 1975).…”
