“…The action of thyroid hormone on ovarian function is probably a complex one, and effects on pituitary release on gonadotrophins, ovarian sensitivity, and peripheral inactivation both of gonadotrophin and of oestrogen have all been suggested (Jones & Ball, 1962). Nevertheless, there seems general agreement with Van Horn (1931) and Chu & You (1945) that thyroid-fed animals show inhibition of oestrous cycles, at least with large doses, and a high pituitary concentration of gonadotrophin. In this connexion it is significant that in the third and fourth week of life, when the metabolic rate of the rat rises to about twice the adult level (Brody, 1945) the concentration of gonadotrophin in the pituitary rises to a value many times that in the adult gland (Lauson, Golden & Sevringhaus, 1939).…”
