The Relation Between Migration and Fdi in the Oecd From a Complex Network Perspective

Abstract: We explore the relationship between human migration and OECD's Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) using a gravity equation enriched with variables that account for complex-network effects.Based on a panel data analysis, we find a strong positive correlation between the migration network and the FDI network, which can be mostly explained by countries' economic/demographic sizes and geographical distance. We highlight the existence of a stronger positive FDI relationship in pairs of countries that are more central … Show more

“…Borrowing from the broad literature related to the ITN, a possible extension of this research would be to explore the determinants of the architecture of the network following traditional economic modeling 30 and null network models 31 . In addition, given the interplay and complementary of trade, migration, financial investment, and M&As flows, it would be interesting to develop a multilayer network analysis 10,18,28 . This could provide new insights on the international relations, and the movement of goods and factors of production that shape globalization.…”

“…A. Garas, A. Lapatinas, K. Poulios explored, based on a panel data analysis, the relationship between human migration and OECD's foreign direct investment [Garas et al 2016]. J. Alcaraz and E. Salamanca identified the relationship between the international movement of enterprises and their location, and the direction of international migration (immigration/emigration) [Alcaraz, Salamanca 2018].…”
