The exploitation of small ruminants (goat and sheep) has always been linked to the development of human civilizations, where they have mainly fed on their derived products such as milk and meat. Currently, the sheep population is around 1 billion head concentrated above 50% in three countries, China, Australia, and New Zealand, contrary to goats with around 720 million heads, distributed mainly in Asia, Africa, and South America. Both species have similar characteristics in some anatomical aspects (a pair of nipples), gestation period (150 days), and presence of seasonal anestrus, differing in terms of magnitude and depth and presence of the male effect. However, they are completely different in feeding habits, nutrient needs, and grazing systems, with differences in terms of the female’s reproductive tract, among other characteristics. Currently, the study of reproduction has intensified over the years in the goats and its counterpart that is the buck. Therefore, in the following topics, the importance of global reproduction of the goat will be discussed, considering that progress has been made today in the application of third generation reproductive techniques and that today they are already consolidated and developed in the bovine species.

This study aimed to assess the effects of short and long synchronization protocols, combined with post-synchronization human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration, on the reproductive performance of lactating hair goats during the non-breeding season, considering their inadequate pasture conditions. A total of 60 goats were randomly divided into four groups (G1, G2, G3, G4). Progesterone (flugeston acetate)-impregnated intravaginal sponges with were used for 5 days in G1 and G2 and 12 days in G3 and G4. All received a 500 IU pregnant mare’s serum gonadotropin (PMSG) injection 48 h before sponge removal and were exposed to bucks 12 h later. Groups G2 and G4 received a 500 IU hCG injection on the eighth day after mating. Groups G1 and G3 did not receive any application after mating. Blood samples were collected on the 8th, 15th, and 22nd days for post-mating progesterone analysis, and pregnancy examinations were performed on the 35th day. The study showed a 90% total oestrus rate (54/60). However, there were no significant differences in conception, pregnancy, and kidding rates among the groups. Serum progesterone concentrations significantly increased on the 15th day in G2 and G4, where hCG was administered. In summary, hCG raised progesterone levels but did not significantly affect the reproductive performance of undernourished, lactating goats in a non-breeding season, suggesting that environmental factors and animal nutrition play a crucial role in synchronization outcomes.

The Effects of Oral Progestagen Administration on the Fertility of Synchronized Goats During the Breeding Season

The objective of this study was to assess the impact of oral progesterone (Altrenogest) administered after mating on fertility in goats synchronized during the breeding season. A total of 47 Hair goats were included. Animals were administered a progesterone-impregnated intravaginal sponges for 12 days; 480 IU pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG), and 0.075 mg cloprostenol were injected intramuscularly on day 10 of intravaginal sponge administration. Animals in estrus were exposed to bucks for 12 hours after detection by the foraging buck. The goats were randomly assigned to two distinct groups: Group 1 (G1, n=23) and Group 2 (G2, n=24). G1 goats were orally administrated 4.4 mg of altrenogest per day for 30 days after mating. G2 goats served as controls. Pregnancy examinations were performed by transrectal ultrasonography on the 30th and 42nd days after the mating. Blood samples were taken from one day after mating to 30 days (3-day intervals). Statistical analysis comparing G1 and G2 revealed no significant differences between the groups regarding progesterone concentrations, conception rate, pregnancy rate, lambing rate, multiple birth rate, fecundity, and litter size (p > 0.05). In conclusion, examination of the study results revealed that oral progesterone use had no impact on fertility parameters. Moreover, further research is warranted to explore the efficacy of various oral progesterone analogs.
