The regulation role of carotid body peripheral chemoreceptors in physiological and pathophysiological conditions

Abstract: The importance and the role of peripheral chemoreceptors in the course of the breathing control is still controversial, despite many scientific attempts to solve this problem. The main objective of this review is to give the latest data on the peripheral chemoreceptor role and to highlight the importance of peripheral chemoreceptors for maintaining of oxygen homeostasis in pateints with hypoxia caused by either physiological or pathological conditions.

“…Peripheral chemoreceptors (PChR) are essential oxygen sensors in the human body, crucial for maintaining proper oxygen (O 2 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and hydrogen ions concentrations in the bloodstream [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Their physiological role is in preventing hypoxemia and optimizing the O 2 supply to organs [ 4 ] by activating the rapid systemic responses, including ventilatory and arterial pressure augmentations [ 3 , 4 ].…”

“…Сосудистые эффекты стимуляции периферических хеморецепторов включают коронарную вазодилатацию и вазоконстрикцию в скелетных мышцах и висцеральной области. Брадикардия и периферическая вазоконстрикция во время стимуляции каротидных хеморецепторов могут быть уменьшены или регрессированы эффектами, возникающими в результате сопутствующего гиперпноэ [2,3].…”
