The Regulation of Galaxy Growth along the Size–Mass Relation by Star Formation, as Traced by Hα in KMOS3D Galaxies at 0.7 ≲ z ≲ 2.7*

Abstract: We present half-light sizes measured from Hα emission tracing star-formation in 281 star-forming galaxies from the KMOS 3D survey at 0.7 z 2.7. Sizes are derived by fitting 2D exponential disk models, with bootstrap errors averaging 20%. Hα sizes are a median (mean) of 1.19 (1.26) times larger than those of the stellar continuum -which due to radial dust gradients places an upper limit on the growth in stellar size via star formation -with just ∼ 43% intrinsic scatter. At fixed continuum size the Hα size shows… Show more

“…Initial results obtained by NICER [41][42][43] for PSR J0030 þ 0451 [44,45] complement the tidal measurements from GW170817 [46][47][48], as they constrain the EoS at 1-2ρ nuc [49], disfavoring the softest EoSs [50]. This ensemble of theory, experiment and observation has helped to establish an overall picture of NS matter in the last few years [50][51][52][53][54], which is nonetheless still unresolved at high densities.…”

“…With the exception of the most massive galaxies, the primary mode of galaxy growth is via the star formation process (van Dokkum et al 2013;Wilman et al 2020), that converts gas into new stellar populations. This process is tightly related to the balance of gas E-mail: matteo.fossati@unimib.it accretion into the interstellar medium (ISM) and outflows (Bouché et al 2010;Lilly et al 2013;Sharma & Theuns 2020).…”

“…with the highest number of good fit neighbouring spaxels) regions in the map. This method, leading to the smooth velocity map in the aperture (shown in the bottom-right panel of the figure), assumes that the velocity curves we are considering are smooth (see Wilman et al 2020), which is not a strong assumption for discy star-forming galaxies. We then produced a total restframe 1D spectrum in the aperture by summing all the spaxels corrected for their relative velocity, as shown in Fig.…”
