The Reflection Grating Spectrometer on board XMM-Newton

Abstract: Abstract. The ESA X-ray Multi Mirror mission, XMM-Newton, carries two identical Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) behind two of its three nested sets of Wolter I type mirrors. The instrument allows highresolution (E/∆E = 100 to 500) measurements in the soft X-ray range (6 to 38Å or 2.1 to 0.3 keV) with a maximum effective area of about 140 cm 2 at 15Å. Its design is optimized for the detection of the K-shell transitions of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, magnesium, and silicon, as well as the L shell tran… Show more

“…The Chandra observatory provides two different grating instruments; the Low-Energy Transmission Grating (LETG, 0.1-10 keV; Brinkman et al 2000) and the High-Energy Transmission Grating (HETG, 0.4-10 keV; Marshall et al 2004). The XMM-Newton satellite carries two Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS1 and RGS2, 0.35-2.5 keV; den Herder et al 2001). …”

“…Two of the telescopes have Multi-Object Spectrometer (MOS) CCDs (Turner et al 2001) and the last one uses pn CCDs (Strüder et al 2001) for data recording. There are two Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) (den Herder et al 2001). The Optical Monitor (OM), a photon counting instrument, is a coaligned 30-cm optical/UV telescope, providing for the first time the possibility to observe simultaneously in the X-ray and optical/UV regime from a single platform (Mason et al 2001).…”

“…MCG À6-30-15 was observed during the Guaranteed Time Observations phase on 2000 July 10-11. The instrument modes for the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS; den Herder et al 2001), the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC) MOS (Turner et al 2001a) and PN (Strü der et al 2001), and the Optical Monitor (OM; Mason et al 2001), as well as the associated exposure times for both observations, are summarized in Table 1.…”
