The reefal margin and slope of a Middle Triassic carbonate platform: the Latemar (Dolomites, Italy)

Abstract: The Latemar is a mainly aggrading platform, but shows repeated backstepping during its entire development. The behaviour of the slope does not reflect accommodation changes and lateral consistencies of the lagoonal interior; the Latemar contemporaneously reveals different, even contrasting depositional characteristics. The slope of the late stage platform evolution corresponds at least partially to the "base-of-slope apron" model. Controlling factors on slope evolution are of tectonic (proximity of the Stava L… Show more

“…Occurrence and stratigraphic rang e: Celyphia zoldana is known from the Anisian of the Dolomites, Italy (Ott et al 1980;Senowbari-Daryan et al 1993 and further references; Emmerich et al 2005), Karawanken, Austria (Schafhauser 1997), and from the reef of Aggtelek; both from reef stage 1 and reef stage 2 (this paper).…”

“…C. catenulata catenulata is known from several Ladinian-Carnian reef localities in the former Tethyan realm (Austria, Greece, Italy, Slovakia). The species is described from the Anisian reef limestones of Latemar (Dolomites, Italy) by Emmerich et al (2005) Descriptio n: The specimens of this sponge are poorly preserved and therefore all characteristics are not recognizable. The diameter of both specimens, illustrated in Fig.…”

“…From this point of view, the lower Middle Anisian section in the Mahmudia Quarry resembles the shelf-edge framestones of the Anisian Chinese reefs (Enos et al 1997(Enos et al , 2006Payne et al 2006) and the Middle Anisian to Lower Ladinian boundstone facies of Latemar (Harris 1993;Emmerich et al 2005;Marangon et al 2011) and Marmolada (Russo et al 2000), both in the Italian Dolomites, and the Middle Anisian carbonate mounds in central Iran (Berra et al 2012).…”

“…Emmerich et al 2005), the prominent Tubiphytes occurrence is the most important feature in the lower Middle Anisian buildup in the Mahmudia Quarry. It is stated that the Tubiphytes micro-encruster enabled the stabilisation of carbonate sediments in the upper slope and allowed cement-rich reefs to flourish in the early Middle Anisian (Senowbary-Daryan et al 1993;Enos et al 2006).…”
