Calogero Cristodaro received his doctoral degree in Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering at Politecnico di Torino, as a member of the Navigation Signal Analysis and Simulation (NavSAS) group. His research is focused on the advanced integration of GNSS and external sensors for autonomous mobility applications. He developed his M.S. thesis at European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) addressing maritime multipath and ionospheric scintillation effects on GNSS signals. Currently, he is a navigation system engineer at Thales Alenia Space, Italy. Gianluca Falco received the M.S. degree in communications engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Italy, in 2007 and the Ph.D. degree in electronic and communication in 2011. He is currently a Communication Engineer with the Navigation Technologies Research Area, LINKS Foundation, Turin, Italy. His research interest focuses on multi-sensors fusion, particularly between GPS and inertial navigation systems, and on advanced processing techniques for dual frequency and multi-constellation GNSS receivers.

Global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) are widely used to support logistics, scientific operations, and to monitor the polar ionosphere indirectly, which is a region characterized by strong phase scintillation events that severely affect the quality and reliability of received signals. Professional commercial GNSS receivers are widely used for scintillation monitoring; on the contrary, custom-designed solutions based on data grabbers and software receivers constitute novelty. The latter enables a higher level of flexibility and configurability, which is important when working in remote and severe environments. We describe the scientific, technological, and logistical challenges of installing an ionospheric monitoring station in Antarctica, based on a multi-constellation and multi-frequency GNSS data grabber and a software-defined radio receiver. Having access to the full receiver chain and to intermediate signal processing stages allows a deep analysis of the impact of scintillation and, in turn, a better understanding of the physical phenomenon. The possibility to process high-resolution raw intermediate frequency samples of the signal enables not only the computation of scintillation indexes with the same quality as professional devices but also the design and test of innovative receiver architectures and algorithms. Furthermore, the record and replay approach offers the possibility to process in the lab the signals captured on site, with high fidelity level. It is like being in Antarctica again, but with an unlimited set of receivers and higher computational, storage, and bandwidth resources. The main advantages and disadvantages of this approach are analyzed. Examples of monitoring results are reported, confirming the monitoring capabilities, showing the good agreement with commercial receiver outputs and confirming the validity of post-processing and replay operations.

Global navigation satellite systems play a significant role in the development of intelligent transport systems, where the estimation of the vehicle’s position is a key element. However, in strongly constrained environments such as city centers, the definition of quality metrics and the assessment of positioning performances are challenges to be addressed. Due to the variability of different urban scenarios, the modeling of the dynamics as well as the architecture of the positioning platform, which might embed other sensors and aiding means to the GNSS unit, make it hard to define unambiguous positioning metrics. Performance assessment through analytical models and simulators can be ineffective in terms of cost, complexity, and general validity and scalability of the results. This paper shows how a record and replay approach can be an efficient solution to grant fidelity to a realistic scenario. This work discusses advantages and disadvantages with emphasis on the case study of harsh scenarios. Such an approach requires proper data collections that allow the replay phase to test the GNSS-based positioning terminals. This paper presents the results obtained on a set of field tests related to different scenarios, selected as representative for the key performance indicators assessment.
