Neste artigo, investigamos as tensões e ingerências entre filosofia e matemática no contexto da emergência da matemática pura na Prússia, no século XIX. É bem conhecida, na historiografia, a ocorrência de uma virada epistemológica na matemática nesse século, que viria a reestruturar as concepções internas de seus objetos, em detrimento de uma noção quantitativa e a partir de uma concepção relacional. Argumentamos aqui que essa mudança perpassa, justamente, o entendimento kantiano de que, ao lidar com juízos sintéticos a priori, a matemática se conceberia como fundamento da pensabilidade. Nosso percurso então se faz por meio da investigação de manifestações dessas noções nos trabalhos de dois autores: Jakob Fries, filósofo da ciência e da matemática do início do século, e Hermann Grassmann, matemático, cuja obra viria a influenciar novas concepções na segunda metade do século. Nossa pesquisa identifica, nas perspectivas e práticas de Fries e Grassmann, uma unidade conceitual, em torno da reflexão fundacional da matemática a partir de estruturas abstratas do pensar. Essa constatação revela, por outro lado, a intervenção de práticas e referências filosóficas no interior da prática matemática, produzindo tensões e abarcando um relevante papel na mudança epistemológica em questão.

Setting out to understand Frege, the scholar confronts a roadblock at the outset: We just have little to go on. Much of the unpublished work and correspondence is lost, probably forever. Even the most basic task of imagining Frege's intellectual life is a challenge. The people he studied with and those he spent daily time with are little known to historians of philosophy and logic. To be sure, this makes it hard to answer broad questions like: ‘Who influenced Frege?’ But the information vacuum also creates local problems of textual interpretation. Say we encounter a sentence that may be read as alluding to a scientific dispute. Should it be read that way? To answer, we'd need to address prior questions. Is it reasonable to think Frege would be familiar with the issue? Deep or superficial familiarity? Would he expect his readers to catch the allusion? Can he be expected to anticipate certain objections? Can people he knows be expected to press those objections? A battery of such questions arise, demanding a richer understanding of Frege's environment.
