Why do scientists withhold information from colleagues, violating the professional norm of sharing? Norm violations are usually attributed to individual interests that lead scientists to reject professional norms. In contrast, we take the view that norm violations can occur when professional norms are valued but it is difficult to ascertain the appropriate course of professional conduct. This view suggests that scientists may look to cues from their professional reference groups to resolve sociological ambivalence arising from conflicting role expectations. We analyze a data set of 1,251 geneticists and other life scientists from 100 U.S. universities and find that beyond individual-level explanations, information withholding is influenced by the behaviors of peers as well as the attitudes of superiors in the profession. We discuss the implications for the professions literature, theories of organizational learning, and knowledge management initiatives in firms.

ResumenEl concepto de seguridad ontológica tiene un eco notable en la sociología actual para describir el estado emocional del hombre de la modernidad tardía. Sin embargo, el concepto creado por Giddens en los años ochenta se ha utilizado poco en la investigación empírica preocupada por cubrir diversas fuentes de riesgo o incertidumbre. En este trabajo, se propone una escala de seguridad ontológica a partir de tal articulación de fuentes de riesgo. Para ello, partimos de los resultados de una investigación centrada en la relación entre riesgo, incertidumbre y vulnerabilidad en el contexto de la crisis económica en España. Estos resultados se producen a partir de nueve grupos de discusión y una encuesta con cuestionario estandarizado aplicado telefónicamente a una muestra nacional de 2.408 personas mayores de 18 años. El trabajo se divide en tres campos principales. En el primero, se construye la escala a partir de los resultados de la aplicación de diferentes ítems presentes en el cuestionario utilizado. La segunda parte explora las relaciones de la escala obtenida con las variables más próximas a las dimensiones emocionales de los individuos. La tercera parte observa las variables que contribuyen a los cambios en la escala. Estas variables muestran la característica estructural de la seguridad ontológica. Looking for Determinants of Ontological Security in the Spain of the Crisis AbstractThe concept of ontological security has a remarkable echo in the current sociology to describe emotional status of men of late modernity. However, the concept created by Giddens in the eighties has been little used in empirical research covering various sources of risk or uncertainty. In this paper, a scale for ontological security is proposed. To do this, we start from the results of a research focused on the relationship between risk, uncertainty and vulnerability in the context of the economic crisis in Spain. These results were produced through nine focus groups and a telephone survey with standardized questionnaire applied to a national sample of 2,408 individuals over 18 years. This work is divided into three main sections. In the fi rst, a scale has been built from the results of the application of different items present in the questionnaire used. The second part explores the relationships of the scale obtained with the variables further approximate the emotional dimensions of individuals. The third part observes the variables that contribute to changes in the scale: These variables show the structural feature of the ontological security.

"Generationen können als eine Form 'neuer' sozialer Ungleichheit angesehen werden. Der Beitrag versucht für dieses neue Gebiet der Sozialstrukturanalyse einen Rahmen abzustecken. Hierzu wird eine differenzierte Begrifflichkeit von 'Generation', 'Generationsbeziehungen' und 'Generationsverhältnissen' entfaltet. Eine an Ungleichheiten zwischen Generationen interessierte Sozialstrukturanalyse steht insbesondere vor der Aufgabe, institutionell mitbedingte Generationsverhältnisse wie den Generationenvertrag der Rentenversicherung, das Erbschaftsrecht oder Insider-Outsider-Relationen auf Märkten in ihren Formen und ungleichheitsrelevanten Auswirkungen zu analysieren. Eine Forschungsagenda formiert sich. Gleichzeitig steigt das Vergesellschaftungspotential von Generationen mit der zunehmenden Organisierbarkeit 'schwacher Interessen' durch citizen groups. Eine stärker an materiellen Ungleichheiten, Interessenlagen und Vergesellschaftungsformen von Generationen orientierte Forschung ermöglicht eine engere Verknüpfung von klassischer Sozialstrukturanalyse und Generationstheorie."
