The ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes and the phenotypes of neutrophils in patients with early gastric cancer

Abstract: We examined 55 patients (40 male, 15 female) who were diagnosed from 1987 to 1991 as having early gastric cancer (EGC) stage I according to the general rules of classification of the Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer. Of the 55 patients, 42 (30 male, 12 female) were alive in April 1992. The prognosis correlated well with the ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes (N/L ratio) but not with the total number of white blood cells in the peripheral blood. The patients were divided into two groups according t… Show more

“…The cutoff value used in the present study was different from those in previous reports (2.0, 2.5, or 5.0) [12,14,15]. We, fi rst of all, analyzed overall survival curves according to each NLR value, from a minimum level (<1.0) to the highest level (5.0 ≤).…”

“…Increased numbers of neutrophils and/or decreased numbers of lymphocytes may suppress lymphokine-activated killer cells, thereby increasing the propensity to metastasis [13]. However, only limited information on the clinical signifi cance and prognostic signifi cance of NLR in patients with gastric cancer has been reported [14][15][16][17]. In this study, we measured the preoperative NLR in 1028 patients with primary gastric cancer to determine its clinicopathological and prognostic signifi cance.…”

“…The N/L ratio is a good indicator for the evaluation of the condition of a tumor-bearing host (16,23). In humans, the number of circulating neutrophils (N) are increased in the daytime (daytime rhythm), while circulating T cells, B cells, alphabet T cells and CD4 + lymphocytes are increased at night (24).…”

“…An association between high NLR and increased mortality or recurrence has been observed in various solid organ tumors (Hirashima et al 1998, Walsh et al 2005, Bhatti et al 2010. Liu et al (2013) investigated the total white blood cell and differential counts of 159 patients with DTC and 318 age-and sex-matched controls undergoing thyroidectomy for benign thyroid nodules.…”
