The rapid effect of pulsed dye laser on demodex density of facial skin

Abstract: The Dd of patients before PDL treatment was 13.0 (interquartile range (IQR): 5.0-28.0) and after 3 weeks of PDL treatment it was 6.0 (IQR: 3.0-12.0) with SSSB. After PDL treatment, the Dd was significantly lower than pretreatment the Dd (p = 0.002). The present study shows that PDL significantly reduced Dd in facial skin with one session.

“…Nd:YAG laser also acts on papulopustules but is more effective in ETR than in PPR [177]. These actions on the papulopustules may result from a potential acaricidal effect as a result of increasing skin temperature [178] and, for the Nd:YAG laser, by destruction of the follicular unit [177]. One study suggested that these therapies may therefore be used not only in ETR but also in demodicosis [178], although these findings need to be confirmed.…”

Coagulation necrosis of the Demodex mites has been observed after IPL treatment; nevertheless, the mites recolonized the skin 1 month after the second treatment [179].…”

“…6 There are only a few reports about the effect of PDL or IPL therapy on Demodex mites. 7,8 To our knowledge, no report exists to date, which evaluates the effect of neodymium: yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser irradiation on Dd. Herein, we present a patient who had a simultaneous decrease in Dd after one session of 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser application for facial telangiectasias of ETR.…”

“…The authors speculated two possible mechanisms of IPL application to induce coagulation necrosis of Demodex mites that the mite may contain some chromophores which make it more sensitive than the hair follicule to the energy delivered by IPL device or the spherical structures of the mite may not be able to transfer the energy to the open-ended cylindrical hair follicles. More recently, pulsed dye laser (PDL) application wasreported to significantly reduce Dd in facial skin after one session 7.…”

“…Nowadays, a wide range of treatments for rosacea is available: topical metronidazole, oral metronidazole, topical ivermectin, oral tetracyclines, oral azithromycin (1), oral isotretinoin, systemic steroids, photodynamic therapy, or pulsed dye laser (2). However, in pregnant patients, as several medications can cause significant fetal harm, the treatment alternatives are limited.…”
