The random-beard image method system for scoured combed wool fiber length measurement

Abstract: This paper introduces a new developed wool fiber length imaging measurement instrument, named the random-beard image method, an applied fibrogram method of wool fiber length measurement. It includes four parts, namely the fiber beard preparation, image acquisition and fibrograms and fiber length parameter calculation using the dual beard and a new calculation method of Hauteur length (mean fiber length biased by the cross-section of the fibers). To check the accuracy of the built instrument, the international … Show more

“…According to the existing algorithm, the weighted mean length, main length by weight, quality length by weight, coefficient of variation, and SFC by weight can be calculated from the curve. 14,15,34 As there is no need to align fibers, the dual-beard preparation is significantly faster than the specimen preparation of Almeter and OFDA 4000. In contrast to the HVI beard, the DBI can measure the whole dual-beard, which ensures the integrity of length information.…”

“…Length is also a key index determining the price and usage of cashmere fiber. 17 , 18 Currently, the length testing of cashmere is performed by the hand row method at home and abroad, which is subjective and time-consuming and therefore does not conform to the trend of instrumental measurement. As an alternative to the hand row method, our research group proposed a two-beard method for measuring fiber length in 2012, 19 , 20 and derived a formula for calculating the density of fiber based on the Kubelka–Munk model, which was named the “Wu-Wang” algorithm.…”

“…Currently, the Wu-Wang algorithm has been successfully applied in wool and cotton fiber length measurements. 18 , 22 , 23 However, for the length measurement of cashmere fiber, there are some difficulties as there are great differences in reflectance R∞ of cashmere with white, gray and brown color. There is little difference in the optical parameter R∞ of wool and cotton as their color is almost white, so a fixed R∞ is utilized to test the length of wool and cotton in practice.…”
