“…The gross alpha activity in the spring season was less than MDA for the both depths of soil at all locations (from <220 to <340 Bq kg −1 ), while for the autumn season the values are ranged from 170 to 300 Bq kg −1 . The gross beta activity in soil ranged from 760 to 1170 Bq kg −1 for the spring season, while in the autumn season the values were negligibly higher and ranged from 790 to 1210 Bq kg −1 .The order of magnitude for the values of the gross alpha and beta activity in soil obtained in this study is comparable with the obtained values in the other studies (Lee et al 2014;Dimovska et al 2012;Yalcin and Gurler 2007;Zorer et al 2009). The gross alpha and beta activities in the roots of plants ranged from 33 to <81 and from 290 to 590 Bq kg −1 , while for the rest of plants were less than MDA (from <18 to <42) and from 230 to 490 Bq kg −1 , respectively.…”

“…radon and dust free) coal-mine atmosphere existed, the miner would still be exposed to gamma-rays from the natural radionuclides in the surrounding material, mainly coal. For that reason, determining the gamma-ray related dose rate and comparing it with the accepted limits is still valuable (Yalc ¸ın andGurler 2007, Tsikritzis et al 2008). Practically, the total dose received by the miner can be determined from the sum of the gamma dose received from the walls of mine, the internal dose received from the inhalation of radioactive radon gas and the naturally radioactive coal dust.…”
