The QueuePusher: Enabling Queue Management in OpenFlow

Abstract: Abstract-The evolution of Software-Defined Networking and the overall acceptance of protocols such as OpenFlow, demonstrates the added value of decoupling the data plane from the control plane. Existing SDN Controllers enable the expected flexibility from such networks by dynamically providing a finegrained control of each flow. However, hardware-specific configurations, such as the creation of queues or other mechanisms is out of the scope of these controllers. This work presents an extension to a well known … Show more

“…This can be achieved by multiplexing several operations in the same OVSDB message, and it is especially useful when several queue configurations have to be performed simultaneously. Overall, the API proposed here performs better that other reported similar APIs [11].…”

“…While the QoS mechanism presented in [11] is similar to the one proposed herein, the difference lies in the focus of the paper. The work described in the current paper is focused more on defining the right granularity of the APIs for QoS configuration rather than describing the internals of the implementation as in [11].…”

“…It controls tracking and storing services with their DSCP values, applying policies for services class, and tracking of policies in switches. The QueuePusher [32] extension utilizes OVSDB protocol integrated with northbound API of Floodlight to generate appropriate queue configuration messages. The QueuePusher module uses a CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) API, exposed by Floodlight, that allows external entities to manage Open vSwitch.…”
