Abstract-The OpenFlow (OF) protocol is widely used in Software Defined Networking (SDN) to realize the communication between the controller and forwarding devices. OF allows great flexibility in managing traffic flows. However, OF alone is not enough to build more complex SDN services that require complete control and management of the data plane (e.g. configurations of ports, queues, etc.). The current work contributes to the SDN ecosystem with the implementation of a plugin for the OVSDB protocol, for an existing SDN controller (SDNC). OVSDB complements OF with management functionality such as configuration of devices, ports, queues, etc. An Application Programming Interface (API) for dynamic configuration of QoS resources in the network devices is implemented herein, by using the capabilities of OVSDB. Further, the paper demonstrates the possibility to create network services with coarse granularity on top of the fine granular services exposed by the QoS configuration API at the SDNC. A series of tests emphasize the capabilities and the performance of the implemented QoS configuration API.

Supporting end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) in existing network architectures is an ongoing problem. Although researchers from both academia and industry have proposed many solutions to solve the QoS limitations of the current networking, many of them either failed or were not implemented. Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm has emerged in response to limitations of traditional networking architectures. Its main advantages are the centralized global network view, programmability, and separation of the data plane and control plane. These features have got attention of researchers to improve the QoS provisioning of today's various network applications. In this survey paper, we aim at making a picture of QoS-motivated literature in OpenFlow-enabled SDN networks by comprehensively surveying relevant research studies. We organize the related studies according to the categories that are the most prominent ways in which QoS can benefit from the concept of SDN: Multimedia flows routing mechanisms, inter-domain routing mechanisms, resource reservation mechanisms, queue management and scheduling mechanisms, Quality of Experience (QoE)-aware mechanisms, network monitoring mechanisms, and other QoS-centric mechanisms such as virtualization-based QoS provisioning and QoS policy management etc. In addition, we discuss QoS capabilities of OpenFlow protocol by reviewing its versions along with some well-known, open-source, and community-driven controller projects. Furthermore, we outline the potential challenges and open problems that need to be addressed further for better and complete QoS abilities in SDN/OpenFlow networks and lessons we have learned during preparation of this survey paper.

Abstract-In this paper, we propose an OpenFlow enabled Internet infrastructure, using virtual path slicing in an end-toend path, so that any user connected to an OpenFlow network is dynamically allocated a corresponding right of way. This approach allows an interference-free path, from other traffic, between any two endpoints, on multiple autonomous systems, for a given application flow (e.g., WebHD Video Streaming). Additionally, we propose and implement an end-to-end quality of service framework for the Future Internet and extend the virtual path slice engine to support future Internet technologies such as OpenFlow. The proposed framework is evaluated in distinct multiple autonomous scenarios for a city with a population of 1 million inhabitants, emulating xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line), LTE (Long-Term Evolution) and Fibre networking scenarios. The obtained results confirm the suitability of the proposed architecture between multiple autonomous systems, considering both data and control traffic scalability, as well as resilience and failure recovery. Furthermore, challenges and solutions for experimentation in a large-scale testbed are described.
