The Quantitative Imaging Network: NCI's Historical Perspective and Planned Goals

Abstract: The purpose of this editorial is to provide a brief history of National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute (NCI) workshops as related to quantitative imaging within the oncology setting. The editorial will then focus on the recently supported NCI initiatives, including the Quantitative Imaging Network (QIN) initiative and its organizational structure, including planned research goals and deliverables. The publications in this issue of Translational Oncology come from many of the current members of … Show more

“…Computerized analysis has, and continues to aid in their efforts as it allows for reproducibility and efficiency, while still allowing for personalized medicine. 67 But the advantages of computerized imaging analysis extend far beyond cancer evaluation and treatment, to aiding in our understanding of many different pathological conditions with imaging correlates, not the least of which is brain pathology. In fact, in recent years computerized MR and CT volumetric analysis employing a variety of image analysis software has been used to investigate a gamut of neurological conditions ranging from Alzheimer's, [68][69][70] Schizophrenia, 38,71 Huntington's disease, Tourette's syndrome, 38 Brain tumor, [72][73][74] HIV-related CNS disease 44 and Epilepsy.…”

“…This can be seen from the variety of coauthors on selected publications. 14,15 He had a focused interest in quantitative imaging, but he shared it with a wide range of people. In addition, he carried his interest in quantitative imaging to the United Kingdom, South Korea, and other countries where the value of quantitative imaging could be discussed.…”

“…We delineate acquisition data as proprietary, which subsequently impedes the academic and commercial exploration that traditionally propels potentially impactful ideas beyond the labs they are created in. For example, third party commercial or open-source standardized PET image reconstruction techniques could be developed in a clinically usable form and enable new levels of image quantification standardization across PET machines and centers and boost statistical power in research and multicenter clinical trials (5). Standardization can also make a large impact in the newly emerging fields of big data (6), machine learning (7), and radiomics (8).…”
