The quality of the web of science data: a longitudinal study on the completeness of authors-addresses links

Abstract: The author-affiliation links are the essential elements used for multiple purposes, such as the disambiguation of authors, the attribution of credits of a publication and fractional counting, the analysis of scientific networks, etc.In this article we analyzed the author-affiliation link quality in the Web of Science (WoS) database between 2000 and 2021. We analyzed the link completeness for 32,676,914 scientific publications under different angles: WoS index, document type and the number of authors per public… Show more

“…Firstly, our study relied solely on the WoSCC database as the source of data, which may have led to the exclusion of some publications. Nevertheless, it is important to note that the WoS database is highly regarded by researchers and widely recognized as a high-quality digital literature database, making it a suitable choice for bibliometric analysis [ 63 , 64 ]. Therefore, the data source we had chosen with high credibility.…”

“…), it is advisable to indicate the exact document types analysed, as this may condition the final results. It is also important to bear in mind that some typologies, such as proceeding papers, can have delays of up to three years in their indexing in Web of Science (Maddi & Baudoin, 2022), which can have a notable effect on bibliometric analyses in certain areas.…”

“…However, quantitatively analyzing this phenomenon, particularly in the context of technology or scientific instrumentation, presents several challenges. These studies often require accurate spatial data, encompassing both geographical precision and correct author affiliation links, especially when these results are used to drive changes in science policy and governance (Donner et al, 2020;Frenken et al, 2009;Gao, 2020;Maddi & Baudoin, 2022;Taşkın & Al, 2014). If done correctly, mapping and science visualizations can unveil regions and institutions actively contributing to a particular field or scientific instrument, serving as a powerful tool to present short-and long-term results (Börner et al, 2021).…”

“…Accurate author affiliation links pose another significant challenge. While Web of Science began capturing author addresses as provided by the journals since around 2008, capturing multiple affiliations per author when applicable (Maddi & Baudoin, 2022). Furthermore, there are instances where authors have represented the same address differently (Taşkın & Al, 2014).…”
