BackgroundThe Cornales is the basal lineage of the asterids, the largest angiosperm clade. Phylogenetic relationships within the order were previously not fully resolved. Fifteen plastid genomes representing 14 species, ten genera and seven families of Cornales were newly sequenced for comparative analyses of genome features, evolution, and phylogenomics based on different partitioning schemes and filtering strategies.ResultsAll plastomes of the 14 Cornales species had the typical quadripartite structure with a genome size ranging from 156,567 bp to 158,715 bp, which included two inverted repeats (25,859–26,451 bp) separated by a large single-copy region (86,089–87,835 bp) and a small single-copy region (18,250–18,856 bp) region. These plastomes encoded the same set of 114 unique genes including 31 transfer RNA, 4 ribosomal RNA and 79 coding genes, with an identical gene order across all examined Cornales species. Two genes (rpl22 and ycf15) contained premature stop codons in seven and five species respectively. The phylogenetic relationships among all sampled species were fully resolved with maximum support. Different filtering strategies (none, light and strict) of sequence alignment did not have an effect on these relationships. The topology recovered from coding and noncoding data sets was the same as for the whole plastome, regardless of filtering strategy. Moreover, mutational hotspots and highly informative regions were identified.ConclusionsPhylogenetic relationships among families and intergeneric relationships within family of Cornales were well resolved. Different filtering strategies and partitioning schemes do not influence the relationships. In 1998, a revolutionary system of angiosperm classification, the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group system was published. Meanwhile, another new system of classification of angiosperms, the eight-class system was proposed by C. Y. Wu and colleagues based on long term work on the flora of China. The Flora Reipublicae Popularis Sinicae project was initiated in 1959 and completed by 2004. It is the largest Flora so far completed in the world, including 31 228 species of vascular plants, or one-eighth of the global plant diversity. The English-language and updated Flora of China (FOC) is an international joint effort initiated in 1988 and accelerated in 1998. Up to now, 15 of the 24 volumes of the FOC have been published. Based on the floristic data, the composition, characteristics, floristic divisions and affinities of the flora of China have been studied by Wu and colleagues since 1965. In the past 10 years, analyses of the available floristic data have been very productive. The East Asiatic Floristic Kingdom was proposed in 1998. All 346 families of angiosperms in China, according to the eight-class system of classification, were comprehensively discussed by using knowledge of current and historical distribution of seed plants in the world, together with some morphological and molecular data. A scheme of distribution patterns or areal-types of families and genera of seed plants in China was modified and elucidated, together with a proposed scheme of areal-types of the world. Molecular phylogenetic and biogeographical studies of angiosperms in China in the past 10 years also witnessed a progressive development. Integration of morphological and molecular data and fossil evidence revealed some significant results. Eastern Asia, which used to be regarded as an important center of survival during the ice age, is likely an important center of diversification of angiosperms.

The quantity and antioxidant activity of functional ingredients in various parts of Alpinia uraiensis Hayata were investigated in this study. The ethanolic extracts from the leaves blades, inner cores, petioles, fine roots, stem, outer cores, seeds, rhizomes and main roots of A. uraiensis Hayata were characterized by their antioxidant properties, sugars and high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. These antioxidant properties and sugars have shown a wide range of variety with significant differences among various plant parts. HPLC chromatogram has also demonstrated that all plant parts contain significantly functional ingredients at absorbance 254 nm with various molecule distribution patterns and quantity. The seeds have the best total phenolics, 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazy scavenging activity, total sugar and moderate reducing power activity. This study provides good information of functional ingredients from ethanolic extract of different parts of the A. uraiensis Hayata plant for food and medicinal use. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Traditionally, Alpinia used for food and folk medicine is cultivated throughout Asia. There are ample essential oils and antioxidant ingredients in the root, stem, leaf and seed of Zingiberaceous plants. These functional ingredients have been proven to be beneficial to human health. Many diseases can be prevented or ameliorated by compounds or extracts from Alpinia. Therefore, the Alpinia extracts are good candidates for health foods, cosmetic products or even medical uses. The quantity and antioxidant activity of functional ingredients in ethanolic extracts from various parts of A. uraiensis Hayata were characterized in this study. It can provide good reference for product development, especially in agricultural cultivation for mass production of bulk materials, in the health food and cosmetics industries.
