The psychosocial impact of the implantable cardioverter defibrillator: A meta‐analytic review

Abstract: These findings suggest that poor psychosocial outcome in ICD patients may occur as a result of variables associated with the underlying VA condition, rather than as a direct response to implantation of the device and its therapy. This holds important implications for the development and implementation of psychological interventions for patients experiencing VA, in preference to ICD-specific programmes.

“…The level of acceptance of the device and quality of life did not differ between primary prevention and secondary prevention ICD recipients. Research suggests that ICD-specific fears and symptoms of anxiety are the most common psychological symptoms experienced by ICD recipients, affecting up to a third of recipients [5]. Depression, on the other hand, is reported to occur at rates that are generally consistent with other cardiac populations [8].…”

“…The poor psychosocial outcome in these patients may be related to the underlying cardiovascular condition (Burke et al, 2003), or it may be the effect of surviving an out of hospital cardiac arrest, not related to the treatment received (Kamphuis et al, 2002). It has been found that the lasting psychological distress will not dissipate spontaneously or naturally and that psychosocial intervention may be warranted (Kamphuis et al, 2003).…”
