Previous studies have found that boys perform better in maths than girls, particularly at the upper end of the distribution. It has been suggested in the literature that differences in the size of the maths gap across countries may be explained by differences in the prevalence of single-sex schooling. The Irish education system is interesting both for the fact that a sizeable proportion of children attend single-sex schools, and because these single-sex schools are part of the general educational system, rather than serving a particular socioeconomic group. We exploit this fact to test whether the gender composition of schools affects the maths differential at the top of the distribution. In keeping with research on other countries, we find a significant maths gap in favour of boys, but contrary to suggestions in the literature, our results provide no evidence that single-sex schooling reduces the gap. If anything, the gender differential is larger for children educated in single-sex schools than in co-educational schools. These findings are not affected by the inclusion of a proxy for early childhood ability or by the use of instrumental variables to control for potentially endogenous school choice.JEL Classification: J24, I21

A re opposite gender friends in high school a distraction or do they promote better academic achievement? Students spend a large amount of time with their school friends (Fuligni and Stevenson 1995;Gager, Cooney, and Call 1999), yet we know little about how the composition of their school friendship networks affects them. Understanding friendship network gender composition speaks to the single-sex education debate to the extent that changes in class and school gender composition affect both the formation of and interactions with opposite gender school friends.The single-sex versus mixed gender education debate has received renewed attention in the wake of Title IX regulations that eased constraints on single-sex education within the US public school system (Jackson 2012). Single-sex classes and schools may make it easier for educators to address gender gaps in achievement (Fortin, Oreopoulos, and Phipps 2013;Bertrand and Pan 2013;Ku and Kwak 2013) and traits such as competitiveness (Gneezy, Niederle, and Rustichini 2003;Niederle and Vesterlund 2010) that have been shown to affect labor market outcomes (Buser, Niederle, and Oosterbeek 2012). Edukacja zróżnicowana ze względu na płeć budzi wiele kontrowersji wśród polityków, rodziców, nauczycieli, a także badaczy edukacyjnych. Niestety dyskusja na temat jej ewentualnych przewag nad szkolnictwem koedukacyjnym, w obliczu niepewnych dowodów naukowych, została zdominowana ideologicznie i do dziś taką pozostaje. W artykule zidentyfikowano problemy definicyjne, które utrudniają prowadzenie dyskusji nad efektywnością edukacji zróżnicowanej ze względu na płeć. W neutralny sposób, oczyszczone z nieścisłości i pozamerytorycznych treści, zostały przedstawione argumenty wysuwane zarówno przez zwolenników, jak i przeciwników tego, uważanego za kontrowersyjny, sposobu organizacji nauczania.Słowa kluczowe: socjologia edukacji; badania edukacyjne; edukacja zróżnicowana ze względu na płeć; koedukacja; polityka oparta na dowodach.
