The Pseudomonas AvrPto Protein Is Differentially Recognized by Tomato and Tobacco and Is Localized to the Plant Plasma Membrane

Abstract: The avrPto gene of Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato triggers race-specific resistance in tomato plants carrying Pto , a resistance gene encoding a protein kinase. When introduced into P. s. tabaci , avrPto triggers resistance in tobacco W38 plants that carry the corresponding R gene. The AvrPto protein is believed to be secreted into host cells through the bacterial type III secretion pathway, where it activates disease resistance in tomato by interacting with Pto. We report here the identification of two distin… Show more

“…Two non-NBS-LRR R proteins with PK activity, FEN and PTO, are myristoylated in tomato (6,80). Both these proteins are induced by avrPto, a myristoylated secreted protein from bacteria (81). MYR appears to be involved in the R mechanisms of many higher plants (see also Refs.…”

“…Myristoylation is a eukaryotic-specific posttranslational modification that often is used in combination with palmitoylation to target proteins to the plasma membrane (49). Multiple P. syringae T3Es acylated and localized to the plasma membrane once delivered into plant cell by the type III secretion system (50)(51)(52)(53)(54).…”

“…When delivered to or expressed in plant cells, a large number of bacterial effectors localize to the plasma membrane through their N-myristoylation motifs, including Pst effectors AvrB, AvrRpm1, AvrPphB, AvrPto, and HopF2 (G枚hre et al, 2008;Nimchuk et al, 2000;RobertSeilaniantz et al, 2006;Shan et al, 2000;Xiang et al, 2008). XopR also localizes to the plasma membrane in plant cells.…”
