The protective effects of Ocimum basilicum extract against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in male rats; an anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and antiapoptotic action

Abstract: Introduction: Some studies are in favor of protective and anti-inflammatory effects of Ocimum basilicum (OB) against renal failure. Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the protective effects of OB extract against gentamicin (GM)-induced nephrotoxicity in male rat models of acute kidney injury. Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven adult male Wistar rats with the weight of 200-250 g were prepared under standard condition (12 h light/dark cycle, 20 to 22°C temperature). In the gentamicin group (GM)… Show more

“…Few nonrenal factors affect serum creatinine; hence, creatinine is a better renal function marker than BUN [49]. Basil has prevented the nephrotoxic effects of TAA and gentamicin in rats [27,50] and acetaminophen in Balb/C rats [51], which is a sort of oxidative stress. Similarly, in the present study, basil could reduce creatinine levels as an indicator of renal function than the control group.…”

“…Additionally, the present study showed that basil increased the mucosal activity against important pathogens in the aquaculture industry. The antimicrobial properties of basil have been demonstrated in various studies [50,76]. Taecowisan et al [77] indicated that the basil's antibacterial effect is related to the major components of basil extract, namely linalool and 1,8-cineol.…”

“…Mechanistically, gentamicin initiates inflammatory processes by activating the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) sig-naling pathway at the site of injury (23), disrupts the respiratory chain, reduces ATP synthesis, and, eventually, by increased production of ROS, leads to oxidative stress and apoptotic cell death (24)(25)(26)(27). Gentamicin also enhances lipid peroxidation in the renal cortex, leading to the deterioration of renal structure and function (20).…”

“…Te infammatory state of renal failure is considered a novel risk factor for atherosclerosis. To this end, several herbal and chemical drugs have been studied to alleviate infammatory states with conficting results in humans and animals [42,46,[53][54][55]. Due to the general interest of the public in traditional medicine and their high compliance in this manner, numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate the efcacy of their potentially benefcial properties on infammatory markers and lipid profles.…”
