The protective effect of royal jelly against cisplatin-induced renal oxidative stress in rats

Abstract: The CP-induced changes in histopathologic findings of kidneys were partially reversed by treatment with royal jelly. The results provide further insight into the mechanisms of CP-induced nephrotoxicity and confirm the antioxidant potential of royal jelly.

“…To our knowledge, the antiinflammatory and antioxidant actions of RJ have ap- International Journal of Hematology and Oncology peared in the literature to date. [16][17][18][19][20][21] In our study, the absence of any difference between the control group and the groups using only RJ50 and RJ100 alone groups demonstrates that RJ did not cause oxidative stress individually and did not involve a direct change in antioxidant enzyme activity. Its antioxidant effects mentioned above further confirm this result.…”

“…In addition, changes in serum creatinine and electrolyte levels have been observed primarily in cases of functional disorders of the kidney tissue and tubule damage. 3,19 The decrease observed in blood glucose levels in the IR group may be related to reduction in food intake. Due to the scarcity research on the investigation of the effects of irradiation on other biochemical parameters, it was not possible to include information about this in our study.…”

“…Thus in recent years, there has been a great interest in naturally obtained formulas that mitigate this effect. One of the most beneficial and remedies for such effects, used also as a dietary supplement, is royal jelly (RJ) (Silici et al, 2010).…”

“…However, the complete beneficial effect is limited due to its nephrotoxic property (Cvitkovic 1998;Hanigan and Devarajan 2003;Carvalho Rodrigues et al 2010). Cisplatin causes differential toxic effects on renal antioxidants and lipid peroxidation by increasing the hydroxyl radicals formation resulting in glutathione (GSH) depletion and impairing the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (Kuriakose and Kurup 2010;Silici et al 2010). It causes an increase in the lipid peroxidation and plasma creatinine level (Dwivedi et al 1996;Husain et al 1996).…”
