The protective effect of lycopene against oxidative kidney damage associated with combined use of isoniazid and rifampicin in rats

Abstract: It is known that the combined use of antibiotics, such as isoniazid and rifampicin, in the treatment of tuberculosis causes oxidative kidney damage. The aim of this study was to biochemically and histopathologically investigate the effect of lycopene on oxidative kidney damage due to the administration of isoniazid and rifampicin in albino Wistar male rats. Lycopene at a dose of 5 mg/kg was orally administered to lycopene+isoniazid+rifampicin (LIR) rats, and normal sunflower oil (0.5 mL) was orally administere… Show more

“…Lycopene is a carotenoid with antioxidant properties (Figure 13) found in tomato and other red fruits and vegetables [208]. Lycopene was shown to be protective in oxidation of lipids, proteins and DNA in vivo and to exhibit protective effects against different nephrotoxic agents [209,210]. Lycopene exhibited anti-inflammatory, antiautophagic and antiapoptotic properties in an experimental model of CIN in rats [211].…”

“…Lycopene is a naturally occurring carotenoid that can be found in tomatoes, watermelon and other foods [ 146 , 147 , 148 ]. It has a wide range of biological activities, including protection against cancer, oxidation, aging, and inflammation [ 149 , 150 , 151 ]. Lycopene is an effective antioxidant and has a high potential for scavenging free radicals [ 152 ].…”

“…As a result, the utilisation of antioxidant therapy is one of the significant approaches to avert and mitigate the advancement of CKD [ 56 ]. Lycopene is a potent antioxidant and an efficient free radical scavenger that has been investigated and shown to protect the kidney against chemically induced damage [ 125 , 126 ]. In female Wistar rats fed a high-fat diet, the supplementation of 200 ml of lycopene extract twice a week for 8 weeks significantly reduced plasma creatinine, urea, serum angiotensin-converting enzymes, renal tissue malondialdehyde, and C-reactive protein levels but increased total protein and tissue antioxidant enzyme levels [ 127 ].…”
