Biofoam is a biodegradable material that can substitute the use of styrofoam. Biofoam can be produced from Rhizopus sp. mycelia. In the development of biofoam from fungal mycelia, mycelia act as a reinforcement or binder for the substrate (media) because mycelia grow and spread throughout the substrate. Therefore, optimization of the growth medium of Rhizopus sp. by varying the substrate composition and incubation temperature had been done in this research. The substrate consisted of sugarcane trash (particle size 20, 40, and 60 mesh), starch (soybean, sago, and rice), CaCO3, and distilled water. Rhizopus sp. inoculum that had been mixed with the substrate was incubated at certain temperatures (29 and 35°C) for 7 days. The FESEM-EDS analysis of starches showed that soybean has more nutrients than rice and sago starch. The optimum substrate for the mycelia growth of the Rhizopus sp. is TK 1, which consists of 20 mesh sugarcane trash, soybean flour, CaCO3, and distilled water with an incubation temperature of 29°C. That mycelia grew well and evenly distributed throughout the TK 1 substrate with an average length of ± 1.3 cm. The mycelia distribution throughout the media can also be seen by morphology analysis using Kayence digital microscope.The suitable substrate composition and incubation temperature can optimize the growth of Rhizopus sp. mycelia.

Chromium (III) sulfate is a popular tanning agent for producing leather. However, chrome tanning wastewater is one of the problems in the leather tanning industry. To prevent this, tanning using vegetable materials can be used in the leather tanning process. One of the natural ingredients that can be used is mimosa. However, mimosa is relatively expensive, so a substitute/combination tanning agent is needed to make tanning costs cheaper. This research aims to determine the effect of using a combination of mimosa and silicic acid from rice husk (RHSA) tanners on the quality of the tanned leather produced. This research uses a completely randomized factorial design with mimosa and RHSA as factors. The analysis shows that the best treatments were 20% mimosa and 20% RHSA. In addition, the analysis shows that the treatment met the standard. The resulting shrinkage temperature was 84 °C, tear strength was 39.98 N mm-1, tensile strength was 26.42 N mm-2 and elongation at break was 41%. Combination tanning also shows no significant difference from conventional tanning and reduces mimosa without decreasing leather quality.

Due to their variety, specific activity, and mild reaction conditions, enzymes have a wide application in beam house processes such as soaking, dehairing, bating, and de-greasing. Recently, due to improvements in biotechnology, re-bating after chroming has received increased attention. The aim of this work was to investigate the application of enzyme preparation in the re-bating process and its effect on the semifinished and finished product, as well as its influence on post-tanning operations. The enzymatic treatment of chromed semifinished leather (wet blue) led to a higher shrinkage temperature (1–6 °C), greater water vapour absorption (0.3–5.5%), better chromium compounds exhaustion during re-chroming (4–21%), and better dye penetration. Moreover, collagen was affected during the enzymatic process; the results showed a greater concentration influence in the operation compared to the process time. On the other hand, no effect on the physical and mechanical properties and fat-liquoring process was observed. Overall, these results indicate that some properties and processes are improved; however, before use for re-bating, every enzyme should be carefully investigated.
