Unfired clay bricks are an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional masonry materials such as fired bricks and concrete blocks but their use is currently limited by their relatively poor mechanical and durability properties. While products like cement and lime are commonly added to earthen materials in an effort to improve their physical performance, these additives can also have a negative influence on the overall environmental impact. The purpose of this research is to investigate the use of alginate, a natural and renewable biopolymer obtained from brown seaweeds, as an admixture for unfired clay blocks. A total of 5 different alginates have been investigated and combined with 3 soil compositions to create prototype specimens which have then been characterised and compared in relation to flexural and compressive strength, microstructure, abrasive strength and hygroscopic behaviour. The results demonstrate that improvements in mechanical strength are dependent on the type of alginate used and the composition of the soil. The greatest increase in compressive strength is achieved using an alginate sourced from the Laminaria Hyperborea seaweed and offers a value more than double that of the equivalent control specimen. Increases in the alginate dosage do not necessarily lead to an increase in strength suggesting that there is an optimum concentration at which strength improvement is most effective.

Earth has been used as construction material since prehistoric times, and it is still utilized nowadays in both developed and developing countries. Heritage conservation purposes and its intrinsic environmental benefits have led researchers to investigate the mechanical behaviour of this material. However, while a lot of works concern with rammed earth, CEB, and adobe techniques, very few studies are directed towards cob, which is an alternative to the more diffused rammed earth and adobe in specific geographic conditions. Due to this lack, this paper presents an experimental program aimed at assessing the failure mode and the main mechanical properties of cob earth walls (compressive strength, Young’s modulus, and Poisson’s ratio) through monotonic axial compression tests. Results show that, if compared with CEB, adobe, and rammed earth, cob has the lowest compressive strength, the lowest modulus of elasticity, and Poisson’s ratio. Differences are also found by comparing results with those obtained for other cob techniques, underlining both the high regional variability of cob and the need of performing more research on this topic. A strong dependence of material properties on loading rate and water content seems to exist too. Finally, the ability of a common analytical method used for masonry structures (an FEM macromodelling with a total strain rotating crack model) to represent the mechanical behaviour of cob walls is showed.

Climate change has an impact on all the areas that operate in a construction environment and, essentially, on the life cycle of a home; in which the materials affect the construction process according to their energy content. The adobe is used for its thermal conductivity to improve the internal temperature of a home; However, in cold climates their behavior is not very efficient. In this sense, the phase change material (PCM) can be used as an alternative because it is capable of storing latent heat and increasing the thermal mass of a building. In the present work, 06 insulation systems for walls, ceilings and floors of an adobe house are analyzed thermal insulation system is proposed, and a prototype is made with some components in 3D printing; the results indicate that the systems Trombe-PCM wall, translucent concrete block wall-PCM, false ceiling-PCM, concrete ceiling-PCM, alveolar floor-CM and plasterboard floor-PCM are adequate; with the proposed insulation system, an improvement of 42.71% of the internal thermal comfort is achieved when compared to adobe house without PCM; and an increase of 320.38% with respect to the Imata temperature, while the Trombe-PCM wall system prototype allows to make corrections in the design for its implementation on a real scale.
