The Proper Motion of the Large Magellanic Cloud UsingHST

Abstract: We present a measurement of the systemic proper motion of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) from astrometry with the High Resolution Camera (HRC) of the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST ). We observed LMC fields centered on 21 background QSOs that were discovered from their optical variability in the MACHO database. The QSOs are distributed homogeneously behind the central few degrees of the LMC. With 2 epochs of HRC data and a ∼ 2 year baseline we determine the proper motion… Show more

“…Our proper motion for the SMC Red is dominated by stars in the red clump and RGB phases which typically have ages between 1 Gyr and a few Gyr. On the other hand, HST observations are dominated by main-sequence stars with a small number of SGB, red clump and RGB stars (Kallivayalil et al 2006;Piatek et al 2008).…”

“…Peñarrubia et al (2008), Klimentowski et al (2009) andŁokas et al (2010), they all rely on the dSphs plunging to pericentres that are a factor of three or four nearer the Milky Way (≈20 kpc) than their current positions and observed proper motions allow (Piatek et al 2006(Piatek et al , 2007(Piatek et al , 2008. Given the observed disk of satellites (Kroupa et al 2005) and that the Magellanic Clouds are not bound to the Milky Way (Kallivayalil et al 2006b,a) these orbits are improbable, so other mechanisms should be investigated.…”
