The promising applications of nanoparticles for synthetic dyes removal from wastewater: recent review

Abstract: PurposeWater is a vital natural resource without which life on earth would be impossible. Properties of synthetic dyes like high stability and noxious nature make it difficult to remove them from the effluent. This review focuses on the removal of synthetic dyes using nanoparticles (NPs) based on the adsorption principle.Design/methodology/approachAdsorption technique is widely used to remove synthetic dyes from their aqueous solution for decades. Synthetic dye removal using NPs is promising, less energy-inten… Show more

“…Nanotechnology has been used in biomedical science, environmental applications, biosensors, nanomedicine, targeted drug delivery, imaging and theranostics (Agraharam, Saravanan, Girigoswami, & Girigoswami, 2022;Balasubramanian, Girigoswami, & Girigoswami, 2023;Deepika, Gopikrishna, Girigoswami, Banu, & Girigoswami, 2022;Haribabu, Girigoswami, & Girigoswami, 2021;Jagannathan, 2022;Keerthana et al, 2022;Vedhantham, Girigoswami, Harini, & Girigoswami, 2021). The use of nanotechnology and natural compounds has been used recently for the treatment of wastewater (Abdelghaffar, Abdelghaffar, Mahmoud, & Youssef, 2019;Ilame and Ghosh, 2022). By reducing the cumulative energy consumed during the synthesis or production process, nanomaterials have been used to solve water pollution.…”

“…More than 75% of the new diseases detected in the last 3 decades are ones with Zoonotic origins-meaning they originated as a result of the spread of bacteria, viruses, or other parasitical organisms from wild/domestic animals, to Homo sapiens. Also, drug, metal resistance microbes are continuously generating due to high-level pollution of drugs in sewage, ocean, etc (Ghosh et al, 2013;2019;Panchal et al, 2020;Ilame and Ghosh, 2021). SARS, MERS, Ebola, and the latest COVID-19 (SARS-Cov-2) have been described by experts as an honest natural response to humanity's uncontrolled exploitation of nature.…”

“…6 Synthetic dyes are known to be recalcitrant, bio-accumulative, and exhibit toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic properties. 7 Consequently, the demand for eco-friendly products has surged, as environmental protection agencies have taken notice of the harmful aspects associated with synthetic dyes.…”
