The promise of nanotechnology for solving clinical problems in breast cancer

Abstract: Approaches for breast cancer treatment are invasive, disfiguring, have significant side-effects, and are not always curative. Nanotechnology is an emerging area which is focused on engineering of materials <100 × 10(-9) m. There is significant promise for advancing nanotechnology to improve breast cancer diagnosis and treatment including non-invasive therapy, monitoring response to therapy, advanced imaging, treatment of metastatic disease, and improved nodal staging. Current approaches and important future di… Show more

“…3 Preliminary evidence indicates the potential of nanoparticles to cross biological barriers and cause adverse health effects. 4 On a positive note, nanoparticle-based theranostics 5 are one of the most promising applications that can help shape the way diseases 6 are diagnosed and treated 7 by MRI, 8 X-Rays, 9 and Photo Acoustic Tomography (PAT). 10 Both the potential adverse effects and the theranostics efficacy are directly related to the nanoparticle uptake from the cells.…”

“…Nanotechnology has potential to revolutionize cancer diagnosis and therapy comprising non-invasive therapy, advanced imaging, monitoring response to therapy, improved nodal staging and treatment of metastatic disease [5]. Nanotechnology may modify pharmaco-kinetics and delivery refining effectiveness and lessening side effects [23,24]. The size and surface properties enrich drug portability, mobility, flexibility and thus enhance choosy internment in tumour tissue making them potentially operative tumour conveyance vectors [25].…”
