The promise and challenge of cancer microbiome research

Abstract: Many microbial agents have been implicated as contributors to cancer genesis and development, and the search to identify and characterize new cancer-related organisms is ongoing. Modern developments in methodologies, especially cultureindependent approaches, have accelerated and driven this research. Recent work has shed light on the multifaceted role that the community of organisms in and on the human body plays in cancer onset, development, detection, treatment, and outcome. Much remains to be discovered, ho… Show more

“…S3 online). We also found that skin microbiomes of rainbow trout were not so similar between the present findings and those of others 29 , 31 compared to the gut microbiomes, although it should be also noted that many of other factors can also leads to different results 47 . Therefore, the microbial community of fish skin might be controlled by changing the microbial community in surrounding water in a closed system.…”

“…In recent years, a lot of evidence has shown that microbiome is closely related to human cancers including genitourinary cancers ( 14 , 15 ). The microbiota of the genitourinary system are the causative factors or cofactors of urinary system tumors such as prostate cancer ( 16 ) and bladder cancer ( 15 ).…”

“…The presence of microbes could be used as a bioindicator to ensure early detection and therefore treatment of disease at its early stages. A method to trace those microbes in response to disease should be devised [ 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 ]. Microbes need to be characterized in each kind of cancer, and proper control measures need to be devised for treatment [ 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 ].…”
