The Promiscuous Life of Plant NUCLEAR FACTOR Y Transcription Factors

Abstract: The CCAAT box is one of the most common cis-elements present in eukaryotic promoters and is bound by the transcription factor NUCLEAR FACTOR Y (NF-Y). NF-Y is composed of three subunits, NF-YA, NF-YB, and NF-YC. Unlike animals and fungi, plants have significantly expanded the number of genes encoding NF-Y subunits. We provide a comprehensive classification of NF-Y genes, with a separation of closely related, but distinct, histone fold domain proteins. We additionally review recent experiments that have placed … Show more

“…They bind DNA at CCAAT sites as heterotrimeric complexes composed of single subunits and are reported to be regulating drought responses in many plant species (Stephenson et al 2007;Hackenberg et al 2012). NFYA's expression is regulated at transcriptional and post transcriptional level by miR169 (Petroni et al 2012) and has positive and negative effects on gene expression (González et al 2012). Upregulation of NFYA in tolerant clones of Hevea in this study indicates its strong association with drought tolerance.…”

“…Members of the heterotrimeric, nucleosome-like NF-Y family of TFs are targets of the NIN protein (Soyano et al, 2013) and mediate early infection and nodule development processes (Petroni et al, 2012;Laloum et al, 2013Laloum et al, , 2014. NF-YA subunits bind to conserved CCAAT motifs in promoters, where they recruit the histone 2A/2B-like NF-YC and NF-YB subunits (Nardini et al, 2013), which also bind DNA, albeit nonspecifically.…”

“…2, 3; Tables 1, 2). Our conclusion is supported by three OsNF-YC and three OsNF-YB proteins that are clustered in the same phylogenetic clade (Thirumurugan et al 2008;Petroni et al 2012;Laloum et al 2013) as AtNF-YC3/-YC4/-YC9 proteins and AtNF-YB2/-YB3 proteins, which are known to influence flowering (Kumimoto et al 2008, 19 2010). However, the possibility that the OsNF-YC subunits interact with other OsNF-YB subunits in other developmental processes, cannot be excluded.…”

“…6), and the report of Thirumurugan et al (2008) that OsNF-YB2, which is involved in chloroplast biogenesis (Miyoshi et al 2003), interacts with OsNF-YC subunits in yeast. OsNF-YC4-RNAi and OsNF-YC6-RNAi plants could be due to the functional redundancy of these genes with the homologous OsNF-YC genes (Thirumurugan et al 2008;Petroni et al 2012;Laloum et al 2013). Transgenic plants over-expressing the OsNF-YC genes showed either delayed or accelerated flowering only under LD conditions ( Fig.…”
