The Prognostic Value of Several Periodontal Factors Measured as Radiographic Bone Level Variation: A 10‐Year Retrospective Multilevel Analysis of Treated and Maintained Periodontal Patients

Abstract: Within the scope of this study design, many traditional prognostic factors were ineffective in predicting future bone level variation and therefore were of no prognostic value. Conversely, a few specific factors at each level emerged as valuable prognostic factors. At the patient level, the prognostic factor was initial mean bone level in conjunction with a positive IL-1 genotype. At the tooth level, the prognostic factor was tooth mobility. At the site level, the significant prognostic factors were initial bo… Show more

“…These studies met inclusion criteria and did not represent duplicate publishing, but Ehmke et al, 1999 46 and 2003 63 appear to be the same study with different data analysis approaches, and Cattabriga et al, 2001 56 and Nieri et al, 2002 42 appear to be the same study with different endpoints analyzed. For each pair, only a single study was discussed and included in the analysis.…”

“…Twenty‐seven studies 30,36,37,39,40,42‐63 met selection criteria. Twenty‐five of the 27 assayed IL1A (−889) or IL1A (+4845), which are in complete linkage disequilibrium ( R 2 = 1.00, D′ = 1.00) 64 in whites, and IL1B (+3954).…”

“…The bone support of the remaining roots at the time of surgery affected the survival rate of molars with periodontal problems with the initial bone level being the most significant prognostic factor (Nieri et al. 2002).…”

“…The level of periodontal support is the most critical factor for predicting the prognosis of healing after periodontal treatment [1,2]. In general, a tooth with periodontal destruction extending beyond the root apex is considered hopeless, and extraction is the only possible treatment.…”
