The prognostic significance of preoperative leukocytosis and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in patients who underwent radical cystectomy for bladder cancer

Abstract: Introduction: We evaluated the prognostic effects of hematologic parameters of preoperative leukocytosis and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients who underwent radical cystectomy for bladder cancer. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 363 patients who underwent radical cystectomy for bladder cancer between January 1990 and June 2013. In total, 286 patients were included in the study. Age, gender, pathologic stage, lymph node involvement, preoperative hydronephrosis, histolog… Show more

“…10,11 In the case of PCa, the role of NLR on outcomes was validated, particularly in metastatic PCa, where higher NLR indicates more aggressive disease. 12 However, inflammatory process is mediated by different levels of subtypes of cells in different phases.…”

“…Continuous variables, including BMI, age, WBC count, ANC, ALC, AMC, hemoglobin concentration, and platelet count, were dichotomized according to well-validated cut-off points, rather than the median or a receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, to obtain more practical and easily reproducible results. Regarding the WBC count and DC, we defined leukocytosis as a WBC count >11000/μL 19 , 20 , neutrophilia as an ANC >7700/μL 20 , 21 , lymphocytopenia as an ALC <1000/μL 22 , and monocytosis as an AMC >800/μL 23 . Tumor size was dichotomized based on an ROC curve analysis.…”

“…13 The PLT cut-off concentration was 400×10 3 /μL, which is used as the criteria for thrombocytosis. 14 Regarding the leukocytes, the ANC cut-off concentration was 7,700 cells/μL based on the criteria for neutrophilia; 15 similarly, the ALC cut-off was 1,500 cells/μL, based on the criteria for lymphocytopenia, 16 and AMC cut-off was 800 cells/μL based on the criteria for monocytosis. 17 The serum ferritin cut-off value was 200 ng/mL in men and 150 ng/mL in women, which indicate a severe risk of iron overload according to the World Health Organization (WHO) serum ferritin concentration guidelines.…”
