The prognostic significance of p53, p27kip1, p21waf1, HER‐2/neu, and Ki67 proteins expression in gastric cancer: A clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study of 121 Arab patients

Abstract: The expression of p53 in Arab patients with GC correlates with aggressive tumor characteristics and is an independent prognostic factor. The combined analysis of p53 and p27 kip1 is of added prognostic value.

“…The correlation between lymph node invasion and hyperexpression of p21 ras may be useful for selecting therapeutic alternatives for patients with p21 ras -negative tumors (23,24). A significant increase in the incidence of lymph node invasion was observed in cases with marked immunohistochemical positivity for p53 in tumor samples (P= 0.042), as previously documented (4,5).…”

“…This is a conflicting result compared with previous reports (30,31). Although the expression of p16 ink4a is altered in gastric tumors, this alteration is considered to be secondary to p53 mutations (5). In normal mucosa, the expression of p16 ink4a has been reported to be low (32).…”

“…Any increase in parts of genome containing oncogenes, such as HER-2/neu, would play a key role in the onset and development of tumors (16,17). Overexpression of HER-2/neu gene has been reported in 92-95% of gastric cancer cases (18,19).…”

“…The prognosis of patients with gastric cancer has been shown to be influenced by established surgical-pathological features, such as pathological stage, location of the tumor, and histological type and grade of the tumor [2][3][4] . In comparison, the intense search for predictive molecular biomarkers has not yet translated into clinical use [5][6][7] .…”
