The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) predicts overall survival of small-cell lung cancer patients

Abstract: Recent studies have shown the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) had prognostic value in some solid tumors. However, no studies have examined its prognostic role in small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients. In this retrospective study, 724 consecutive SCLC patients were included between 2006 and 2013. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected. The PNI was calculated as 10 × serum albumin value (g/dl) +  .005 × peripheral lymphocyte count (per mm(3)). Univariate and multivariate analyses were perf… Show more

“…Serum ALB level reflects the general nutrition status for patients with malignant diseases. Several studies have been conducted by Zhang and his group to demonstrate the prognostic value of ALB and its composite indexes (e.g., the prognosis nutritional index, PNI) for SCLC patients (17)(18)(19).Besides, the present study is the first study to investigate Overall survival time (days) Survival probability Survival probability Survival probabilityZhou et al Modeling the relationship between LDH and prognosis in SCLC © Journal of Thoracic Disease. “…Therefore, the PNI is considered a good index that reflects both the nutritional and immune status of the host (Ikeya et al 2015). Although the PNI was originally proposed by Onodera to assess postoperative complications of patients who underwent gastrointestinal surgery (Onodera et al 1984), increasing evidence has shown that the PNI is closely related to long-term outcomes and represents an independent prognostic factor for the survival of patients with various cancers (Ikeya et al 2015;Goodwin and Torres 1984;Hong et al 2015;Hofbauer et al 2015;Jiang et al 2014;Du et al 2015). In the current study, we conducted a retrospective study to investigate the significance of the PNI in predicting the prognosis of NPC patients.…”

“…Several studies have already identified pretherapeutic prognostic markers and scores to predict outcome in SCLC patients [7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14]. A recent study also demonstrated that pretreatment mGPS and PNI are independent predictors of OS in patients with advanced SCLC [14].…”

“…For about 30 years, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and serum albumin have been described to predict OS in SCLC [7,8,9]. Different markers and scores for acute inflammation, i.e., the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, the modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) have been associated with poor outcome in SCLC [10,11,12,13,14]. …”
