Acta vet. scand. 2002, 43, 221-230.-Twenty-nine dairy farms were selected to determine the incidence of clinical mastitis, prevalence of sub-clinical mastitis and bacterial aetiology in the West Littoral Region of Uruguay. In samples taken by the owner and frozen at-20 ºC during a week the incidence rate of clinical mastitis was determined as 1.2 cases per 100 cow-months at risk. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common isolated pathogen in 37.5% of 40 milk samples from clinical cases obtained in 1 month. No bacteria grew in the 32.5% of the total samples. A sub-sample including 1077 dairy cows from randomly selected farms was used to determine the prevalence of sub-clinical mastitis. These samples were taken on one visit to each farm. The prevalence was 52.4% on a cow basis and 26.7% on an udder quarter basis. In 55.1% of the quarters of the selected animals with more than 300 000 cells/ml there was no growth. The isolated pathogens from sub-clinical cases and their relative frequencies were: Staphylococcus aureus 62.8%, Streptococcus agalactiae 11.3%, En-terococcus sp. 8%, coagulase-negative staphylococci 7.4%, Streptococus uberis 6.4%, Streptococcus dysgalactiae 1.8%, Escherichia coli 1.5% and Staphylococcus hyicus co-agulase-positive 0.6%. mastitis; Uruguay; cows; incidence; prevalence.

High-quality data are essential for veterinary surveillance systems, and their quality can be affected by the source and the method of collection. Data recorded on farms could provide detailed information about the health of a population of animals, but the accuracy of the data recorded by farmers is uncertain. The aims of this study were to evaluate the quality of the data on animal health recorded on 97 Swiss dairy farms, to compare the quality of the data obtained by different recording systems, and to obtain baseline data on the health of the animals on the 97 farms. Data on animal health were collected from the farms for a year. Their quality was evaluated by assessing the completeness and accuracy of the recorded information, and by comparing farmers' and veterinarians' records. The quality of the data provided by the farmers was satisfactory, although electronic recording systems made it easier to trace the animals treated. The farmers tended to record more health-related events than the veterinarians, although this varied with the event considered, and some events were recorded only by the veterinarians. The farmers' attitude towards data collection was positive. Factors such as motivation, feedback, training, and simplicity and standardisation of data collection were important because they influenced the quality of the data.

Özet: Bu çalışmada, süt sığırcılığı işletmelerinde enfekte inek başına ve işletme düzeyinde ayak hastalıklarından kaynaklanan toplam ve sakınılabilir finansal kayıpların ortaya konulması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla, Türkiye Damızlık Sığır Yetiştiricileri Merkez Birliği'ne bağlı olarak Burdur, Kırklareli ve Konya'da faaliyet gösteren toplam 1684 süt sığırcılık işletmesinden tabakalı tesadüfi örnekleme yoluyla seçilen 87 işletmenin Ekim 2003-Eylül 2004 tacrihleri arasında yüz yüze görüşme şeklinde elde edilen anket verileri ile halihazırda derlenmiş bulunan ikincil veriler kullanılmıştır. Ayak hastalıklarının il genelindeki ortalama insidensi Burdur, Kırklareli ve Konya'da sırasıyla %13.7; %13.4 ve %5.6 olarak tespit edilmiş olup, 3 ilin ağırlıklı ortalama insidensi %10.2, hedef insidens değeri de %6.6 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Ayak hastalığının hafif (interdigital dermatitis), orta şiddette (tırnak problemi) ve şiddetli (taban çürüğü) formlarından meydana gelen kayıplar, enfekte hayvan başına sırasıyla 271TL/vaka, 343TL/vaka ve 509TL/vaka; tüm hastalık formlarının ağırlıklı ortalaması ise 382TL/vaka olarak hesaplanmıştır. Tüm iller ortalaması olarak işletme başına ortalama kayıp 865TL olarak hesaplanmış olup, bunun 589TL'sini (%68) sakınılabilir kayıplar oluşturmuştur. Sonuçta, ayak hastalıklarının süt sığırcılık işletmelerinde önemli ölçüde finansal kayıplara neden olduğu, ancak hastalık yönetimi konusunda başarılı işletmelerin (insidens düzeyi hedef insidens seviyesinde olan işletmeler) söz konusu kaybı önemli ölçüde azaltabildikleri ortaya çıkmıştır.Anahtar sözcükler: Ayak hastalığı, finansal kayıp, süt sığırcılığı, TürkiyeFinancial losses due to lameness in dairy herds in Burdur, Kırklareli and Konya Provinces of Turkey Summary: The objective of the study was to estimate the lameness induced total and avoidable financial losses in modern dairy herds. For this purpose, a prospective longitudinal observation study was carried out in 87 randomly selected dairy herds from 1684 Turkish Dairy Breeding Association (TDBA) herds in Burdur, Konya and Kırklareli provinces between October 2003 and September 2004. The incidence rate of lameness in Burdur, Kırklareli and Konya provinces and weighted average of all were 13.7%; 13.4%, 5.6% and 10.2% respectively. The target incidence rate was calculated to be 6.6%. Financial losses from each cases of lameness were estimated as 271TL/case for mild cases (interdigital dermatitis), 343TL/case for intermediate cases (digital diseases), 509TL/case for the severe cases (sole ulcer) and 382TL/case for the weighted mean of all the disease forms. The mean financial loss for the average dairy enterprise was estimated to be 865TL of which 589TL (68%) was the avoidable losses. The study concluded that lameness causes severe financial losses in dairy herds. However, majority of these losses can be avoided by the dairy farmers.
