The production of female sex pheromone in Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) young males does not influence their mating chances

Abstract: In Bactrocera oleae females attract males, which is in contrast to the majority of Tephritidae. However, the major component of the secretion of the female rectal ampulla glands, 1,7‐dioxaspiro‐[5,5]‐undecane (DSU), was also isolated from the glands of young males. The DSU produced by females and young males attracts males, but not females. In this study, we investigated the role of the production of DSU in young males. The mating performances of young and old males were evaluated, as well as the male‐male cou… Show more

“…One important issue that complicates comparisons among species and studies is that the terms Byoung^and Bold^do not always mean the same ages. While in some cases the age differences are only a few days, in other cases flies are tested from emergence to senescence (Papanastasiou et al 2011;Benelli et al 2013;Harwood et al 2015). On the other hand, time of sexual maturation differ among species.…”

“…In the coenagrionid Ischnura elegans , female-deprived males were induced to engage in same-sex activities (van Gossum et al 2005). Both in the pteromalid Lariophagus distinguendus and in the tephritid B. oleae , no advantages were found, since it was reported that male-male courtships are due to weak sex discrimination based on olfactory ambiguity (Ruther and Steiner 2008; Benelli et al 2013). Based on the present study, P. concolor functionally increased courtship intensities.…”

“…As alternative control tools to the chemical insecticides, several biological control agents such as certain braconid species (Wang et al. ; Benelli and Canale ; Canale and Benelli ) as well as plant essential oils (Canale et al. ) were tested with promising results for the control of the olive fly.…”
