Proper use and efficient management of natural resources are critical to shaping a sustainable future in many resource‐rich countries in Africa. It is also well‐known that globalization creates a great awareness for sustainable resource extraction and provides cleaner production technology transfers to underdeveloped countries and enables them to establish a sustainable development pattern. However, evidence on the role of globalization in reducing the environmental impacts of natural resources in resource‐based economies is relatively scant. This study investigates sustainable future strategies by examining the role of natural resources, globalization, human capital, and urbanization in shaping the ecological footprint that is a broader indicator of environmental sustainability. To this end, Sub‐Saharan African countries—endowed with a rich natural resource base ranging from arable land, forest, freshwater, marine resources, oil, natural gas, minerals, and wildlife—are analyzed through advanced estimation techniques. Empirical results show that both resource dependence and abundance complicate to design a sustainable future by increasing the pressure on the environment. Similarly, urbanization deteriorates ecological conditions in Sub‐Saharan African countries. However, globalization and human capital seem the main sources of a cleaner and sustainable environment. The findings of the study shed new light on the main role of globalization in providing cleaner practices to reverse the negative influence of natural resource dependence and/or abundance on environmental quality.

Institutions in a country ensure sustainability and play a significant role in economic development by encouraging best practices in governmental interventions. A strong and transparent institutional framework opposes corruption and improves the management of public finances, which may also yield desired outcomes for the environment and society. However, the role of institutions in environmental issues is still under-investigated in the literature. This study aims to investigate the relationship between renewable energy consumption, institutional quality, economic performance, and carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions in 18 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries for the period 1992-2015. To this end, robust panel data estimation techniques are employed. The study confirms that a cointegration relationship exists among study variables. Evidence from the empirical results reveals that institutions have beneficial environmental effects. Likewise, renewable energy reduces carbon emissions to mitigate climate change, but nonrenewable energy harms the environment. Institutional quality helps to form the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis in APEC countries. Finally, causality analysis refers to the unidirectional causality running from institutional quality to CO 2 emissions. Results reveal that stronger institutional arrangements in APEC countries could be the solution for implementations of effective environmental regulation to combat rising environmental challenges without sacrificing higher economic growth.

This study examines the impact of remittance inflows, technological innovations, and financial development on environmental quality in Brazil, India, China, and South Africa (BICS) economies over 1990-2016. This study employed a comprehensive environment proxy, i.e., ecological footprint for environmental quality, and also considers more advanced and robust econometric (second-generation) techniques. The outcomes of the current study reveal that remittance inflows and financial development significantly deteriorate the environmental quality, while technological innovations are an essential factor for the reduction of ecological footprint level. Furthermore, the results of the interaction terms show a significantly adverse effect on the ecological footprint. Additionally, the findings of country-wise analysis reveal that remittance inflows and financial development worsen the environmental quality in each sample country, while the technological innovations promote the environmental sustainability that is steady with panel results. Besides, the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis was verified across the BICS economies. Consistent with the key findings, an inverted U-shaped relationship exists between economic growth and ecological footprint in the case of Brazil and South Africa. In contrast, the U-shaped EKC hypothesis exists in the case of China and India. For robust policy implication, the findings of this study highlighted the dire need for "green policy tools" that should be linked with the BICS economy policies and driver for sustained growth.
