Purpose Young prisoners are one of the most vulnerable groups in society for mental health problems and ill-being. Therefore, there is a crucial need to understand their physical, psychological and social situations. This study aims to explore young Cambodian prisoners’ experiences and perceptions of mental health and well-being, their determinants and their coping strategies. Design/methodology/approach Six focus group discussions were carried out in three prisons with a total of 48 young prisoners between the ages of 15 and 24 years (50% women, 50% men). Semi-structured questions guided the discussions, and thematic analysis was applied to analyse the data. Findings Young prisoners reported multifaceted experiences of mental health and well-being. The majority described adverse mental health experiences, while some revealed better well-being, partly influenced by the socio-economic support from outside the prisons and previous involvement or not in drug abuse. The experience of physical overcrowding without emotional attachment among the fellow prisoners was perceived as the overarching determinant of loneliness and mental health problems, while socio-emotional support and rituals were described as the most important coping mechanisms. Originality/value This pioneering study from Cambodia gives young prisoners an opportunity to voice their experiences and perceptions of mental health and well-being in the prison setting. The findings in this study underline the importance of prison authorities tackling overcrowding to promote well-being and reduce mental health problems. Also, the coping mechanisms outlined by the participants should be considered when planning psychosocial interventions.

Introduction: The number of mental and behavioral disorders in juvenile convicts tends to increase and worsen, since this contingent often has a burdened heredity and is prone to development of chronic diseases, and is also committed to the abuse of psychoactive substances. Objective: To study mental health and mental characteristics of minor convicts incarcerated in juvenile corrections of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia based on long-term data of statistical analysis and psychological testing. Materials and methods: We used forms of departmental statistical observation to study mental health of juvenile convicts. Psychological characteristics of 122 juvenile male convicts aged 15–17 years were assessed in 2021 using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and Leonhard–Shmishek Test and then compared with those observed in a similar age and sex group of adolescents. To establish specifics of the incidence in the juvenile convicts, we also compared their disease rates with those registered and sex-adjusted in teenagers aged 15–17 years. We calculated extensive and intensive indicators, 95 % confidence intervals, and statistical significance of differences using the t-tests and the χ-square test. Results: The incidence of mental and behavioral disorders in juvenile convicts incarcerated in juvenile corrections was 10.9 times higher than the standardized incidence in 15 to 17-year-old adolescents (14,050.6 ± 3,881.3 and 1,290.4 ± 427.9, respectively; p < 0.01). We established a low proportion of melancholics (2.9 % (95 % CI: 0.9–7.2), p < 0.05) and the predominance of stable types of temperament in those convicts. Conclusions: The incidence of mental and behavioral disorders in juvenile convicts incarcerated in juvenile corrections is 11 times higher than the sex-standardized incidence in their 15 to 17-year-old peers. Hyperthymic and excitable types of personality accentuation prevail in them with a pronounced tendency to stable types of temperament.

BackgroundAcute respiratory infection is an infectious illness caused by acute viral or bacterial infection. According to a 2018 WHO report, exposures to indoor and ambient air environmental pollution were contributing factors to a higher risk of respiratory problems following 7 million deaths of children under five globally. Housing conditions such as wall material, roof type, kitchen location, sanitation condition, and cooking fuel type are household-level predictors of acute respiratory disease among children under five years of age.MethodThis research used EDHS-2016 secondary data, which are nationally representative. The data collection period was from January 18, 2016, to June 27, 2016. Among the 16,650 total surveys, 10,006 households that had children below 5 years of age. The outcome variable for this study was acute respiratory infection symptoms. Analyses were performed using STATA Version 17.1. The data were weighted before performing analysis to reinstate the representativeness of the sample. In the bivariable analysis, a p value <0.2 was used to screen for multivariable. Multicollinearity was checked using the variance inflation factor. Then, a multilevel multivariable regression model was used in this study for the analysis of acute respiratory infection symptoms and possible predictor variables. Variables with a p value <0.05 in multivariable regression analysis were considered statistically significant predictors.ResultsMost (95.00%) households commonly used solid fuel for cooking, and household main construction materials: 81.44 and 91.03% of floors and walls of households were constructed with unprocessed natural materials, respectively. The prevalence of acute respiratory infection symptoms among children under five years of age was 7.955% (7.397, 8.551%). The findings indicated that acute respiratory infection symptoms among children under five years of age were significantly linked with the age of the children, diarrhea status, residence, region, fuel type, stool disposal, wall material, and floor material.ConclusionInterventions should target modifiable factors such as proper stool disposal of the youngest child, informing the health effects of poor housing conditions such as improving wall and floor construction material to reduce acute respiratory infection symptoms among children under five years of age.
