The primary therapy chosen for patients with localized prostate cancer between the university hospital and its affiliated hospitals in Nara Uro-oncological research group registration

Abstract: BackgroundWe investigated the differences between the preferential primary therapy conceived by the primary doctors and the primary therapy actually conducted for prostate cancer patients in Nara, Japan.MethodsThe distribution of primary therapy and clinical characteristics of 2303 prostate cancer patients - diagnosed between 2004 and 2006 at Nara Medical University and its 23 affiliated hospitals - were assessed. Moreover, the preferential primary therapy for the patients at each clinical stage (cT1-T3bN0M0) … Show more

“…Radical prostatectomy is selected as the initial therapy in 44% of American men with prostate cancer (PCa) [ 1 ]. Our data from Nara Uro-Oncological Research Group (NUORG) in Japan show an RP rate of approximately 30% (40% in stage cT1-2N0M0) with rates of radiation therapy, [ 2 ] but the proportion of radiation therapy is increasing [ 3 , 4 ]. In case of stage cT1-2N0M0 PCa, the corresponding figure was 40%es.…”

“…For localized disease, no randomized study has compared the effectiveness of the three treatment modalities – ie, radical prostatectomy, radiotherapy, and hormonal treatment – and existing evidence does not support superiority of one modality over the others 20. Therefore, patients’ preference for treatment modality and clinical consideration of patients’ age and predictive/biological characteristics are very important in determining the treatment of choice in patients with localized prostate cancer 21,22…”

“…JAPAN Y.H. (Nara Medical University, Kashihara City, Nara, Japan) reported results of a study evaluating the distribution of primary therapy and clinical characteristics of over 2000 prostate cancer patients at Nara Medical University and its 23 affiliated hospitals (25). The study had also investigated the differences between the preferential primary therapy conceived by the primary doctors and the primary therapy actually administered for prostate cancer patients.…”
