The prevalence of NAFLD and NASH among patients with psoriasis in a tertiary care dermatology and rheumatology clinic

Abstract: SUMMARY BackgroundPsoriasis has been linked to metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Data suggest that the prevalence of NAFLD is increased in patients with psoriasis. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and severity of NAFLD in this patient population.

“…the prevalence rate of NAFLD is more than 2.5-fold higher. It should be noted that we do not feel the results of our study discredit the possibility of NAFLD prevalence among psoriasis as determined in other studies conducted in Italy, Netherland, and the USA, which demonstrated that the prevalence was 46%, 47%, and 47%, respectively [2224]. …”

“…Many studies showed that elderly patients are at increased risk of NAFLD with psoriasis even if the skin disease is mild or moderate and not requiring systemic therapy [24, 25]. But an important finding of our study showed that a high prevalence is observed even in middle-aged psoriatic populations; the mean age of patients was 44.02 years.…”

“…Moreover, extracutaneous inflammatory manifestations resulting from direct organ involvement by psoriatic inflammation have been reported, mostly but not exclusively in pustular variants, uveitis, aseptic osteomyelitis and cholangitis being the best identified. Liver test abnormalities (LTA) are a frequent finding in patients with psoriasis, with a prevalence of 24–31% across three main studies, in Italy, India and North America . These studies also highlighted the multiple etiological factors that may account for LTA in psoriasis patients, notably including non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) .…”

“…Patients with NAFLD and psoriasis may also be at an increased risk for severe liver fibrosis(99). In a small study of 109 clinic patients with psoriasis the overall prevalence of biopsy-proven NASH was 22%(100). Interestingly, the presence of NAFLD among patients with psoriasis may also be linked to psoriasis severity(99, 101).…”
