The prevalence of radiographic vertebral fractures in Mexican men

Abstract: SummaryThe prevalence of radiographically ascertained vertebral fractures in a random sample of 413 in Mexican men is 9.7% (95% CI 6.85–12.55). Increase of vertebral fracture rises with age from 2.0% in the youngest group (50–59 years) to 21.4% in the oldest group (80 years and over).IntroductionThis is the first population-based study of vertebral fractures in Mexican men using a standardized methodology reported in other studies.MethodsThe presence of radiographic vertebral fractures increases with age. “…In fact, among those with five or more fractures (n57), all reported back pain. Finally, our study supports the previously found association between smoking and vertebral fractures [20,43] but not between alcohol intake and fractures [44].…”

“…However, qualitative data showed that frequency of patients with the most common type and trauma mechanism of fractures admitted in the Orthopedic Service was consistently increased in female than male genders Tables 1-3; and these groups of results are congruent with previous reports by Johansson H et al [2] and Clark et al [3]. Hence, the more frequent factures in both gender reported in this study Table 2 are similar with that previously reported by Clark et al [3] and the prevalence of fractures obtained in this study (6% in male and 15% in female) was close to the percentages of prevalence (male 9.8% -female 19.2%) reported for vertebral fractures by Clark et al [6,7]. Since the Mexican population is aging and its life expectancy increasing it is expecting the incidence of OP and fragility fractures associated to grow accordingly and to threat the Mexican health system in the near future [1].…”

“…The prevalence rate of vertebral fracture for Mexicans over 50 years of age has been reported on 19.2% for women and 9.8% for men [6,7]. The vertebral fractures increase with the age in both genders, and as occurs in many others countries, the vertebral fractures are largely undiagnosed.…”

“…The overall prevalence in Mexican women was 19.2%, which was the highest among the five countries included in the study ( The prevalence of vertebral radiographic fractures has been studied by digital morphometry in a random sample of Mexican men 50 years and older. In Mexican men, the prevalence of vertebral fracture is half of what is found in women, 9.7% versus 19.5% with the highest rate in older subjects over 80 years: 21.4% [9]. In both sexes, the fractures increased with age, as shown in Fig.…”

“…The second study was based on the random sample used for the Latin American Vertebral Osteoporosis (LAVOS) Study in Mexican women 50 years and over and the vertebral fracture prevalence study in men 50 years and over: [8,9] 807 men and women had a central DXA from spine and femur. Osteoporosis was diagnosed in 9% and 17% of men and women, respectively, and osteopenia in 30% and 43% of men and women at the lumbar spine; for the total femur, osteoporosis was found in 6% of men and 16% of women and osteopenia in 56% of men and 41% of women (Fig.…”
