Background: Psoriasis although a disease of the skin has been reported to be associated with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome in turn is associated with dyslipidemia which is a independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Our study therefore aims to assess lipid profile in patients with psoriasis with an objective to observe and report any significant deviations in the same as compared to healthy controls.Methods: 25 patients with psoriasis and 25 age, sex matched healthy controls were recruited in this study and lipid profile was estimated using commercially available reagent kit which employs the CHOD-PAP method.Results: Significant elevation in levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, VLDL and cholesterol/HDL ratio was observed. Elevated although was observed in case of LDL and HDL levels, but it was statistically insignificant.Conclusions: Dyslipidemia was found to be prevalent in psoriasis patients. Dyslipidemia is an independent risk factor for development of cardiovascular disease. Dyslipidemia in psoriasis therefore clearly suggests an inherent predisposition of psoriasis patients to suffer from cardiovascular diseases. A lipid profile estimation in these patients therefore might serve as an important tool for risk assessment for cardiovascular disease, thereby aiding a timely intervention.

Objective. Destructive periodontitis is one of the most frequent and widespread bacterial infections in humans. Psoriasis is a common condition in the general population. Since both psoriasis and periodontal diseases are characterized by an exaggerated response of the immune system to the epithelial surface microbiota, there may possibly be an association between these two conditions. The aim of the present pilot study was to investigate the prevalence of periodontal disease in psoriasis patients compared to healthy controls. Material and methods. Dental bite-wing X-rays were obtained from 155 psoriasis patients aged 45-60 years, as well as from 155 age-and gender-matched controls. All X-rays were examined by the same investigator for accumulated destructive periodontitis using bone level and loss of teeth as endpoints. Results. A significantly lower radiographic bone level (p < 0.001) and a significantly higher number of missing teeth (p < 0.001) were observed in the psoriasis cases compared to the controls. Conclusion. Our study indicates that psoriasis patients experience more bone loss than age-and gender-matched controls.

Background and Design: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting nearly 2% of the population. In Turkey, the only data about the prevalence of psoriasis from a population-based study is the data of the prevalence of 0.5% in a small district in a rural area. We aimed to provide the first large-scale data in Turkey by determining the prevalence of psoriasis in a large area, in the central and outlying districts of the province of Trabzon. Materials and Methods: A random sample of 7885 (4057 male and 3828 female) adults was collected by using the stratified sampling technique. The study was performed with face-to-face questionnaire administration with participants selected according to the place of residence, gender and age groups. Psoriasis was diagnosed based on the questionnaires filled by patients during these interviews. Crude psoriasis prevalence ratios and age-adjusted psoriasis prevalence ratios according to the Segi population were calculated and presented with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Of 7885 people, 87 were diagnosed with psoriasis, of which 45 were female and 42 were male. The prevalence of psoriasis was found to be 1.1% (95% CI: 0.9-1.3) in the general population. The prevalence of psoriasis in females (1.2%) was higher than that in men (1.0%). Age-adjusted prevalence was 3.9% (95% CI: 3.5-4.3) and 1.0% (95% CI: 0.8-1.2) for females and males, respectively. The presence of a family history of psoriasis increased the psoriasis risk by eight-fold (p<0.001). Conclusion:We found that the prevalence of psoriasis was 1.1% in a large area, in the central and outlying districts of the province of Trabzon. Our study reveals that the prevalence of psoriasis in our country may be lower than that in Northern Europe and North America.
