The prevalence of migraine in meniere's disease

Abstract: This study attempted to determine the prevalence of migraine in unilateral classic Menière's disease and vestibular Menière's disease. Diagnostic criteria for these three entities were identified and charts of patients with episodic vertigo were reviewed. A questionnaire was designed to assess the prevalence of migraine using criteria established previously by other authors. Questionnaires were mailed to patients with classic Menière's disease, patients with vestibular Menière's disease, and a normal control g… Show more

“…An additional 8% of VM patients had hearing loss that required some effort to recognize as inconsistent with MD. How these patients are categorized might explain some of the variation in the concurrence of MD and VM as reported in the medical literature (12,30,38). From a clinical standpoint, the results of this study suggest that MDVM is not a rare occurrence and must be considered when planning treatment interventions, particularly for patients with atypical or seemingly treatment resistant cases of recurrent vertigo.…”

“…Ménière's attacks were always accompanied by headache, photophobia, or aura in 45% of MD patients. Another uncontrolled case series also found an increased prevalence of migraine among MD patients [35], although a questionnaire-based survey found a nonsignificant decrease in prevalence of migraine [36]. Migraine has also been associated with the falls attributed to the otolithic crises of Tumarkin, which are the sudden drop-attacks that have been noted in some patients with MD [37].…”

“…An increased prevalence of migraine in patients with Menière's disease (MD) is well documented [ 51,50 ]. Migraine was twice as high in a group of 78 patients with unilateral or bilateral MD (based on the American Academy of Otolaryngology criteria), than in an ageand sex-matched control group (56% vs. 25%, p<0.001) [ 51 ].…”
