Introduction: During the execution of sentences in prison units, there are deficiencies within the adaptation mechanisms of persons deprived of liberty, this varies depending on the place where they serve the sanction and the length of stay in it. Objectives: To collect information on the prevalence of mental and behavioural disorders in the prison setting, as well as the importance of early psychiatric intervention. Material and method: Theoretical review. Primary sources of information: scientific articles from indexed journals, in specialized medical information search engines. Original publications on mental and behavioural disorders in the prison and prison context were included, from 2016 to April 2021, with an analytical, observational, prospective, retrospective, cross-sectional and randomized design, systematic reviews and meta-analyzes, complete articles, carried out in any country, with subjects over 15 years of age, of any sex or gender, in English and Spanish. Results: 16 articles were included in this theoretical review. The prevalence of mental disorders within the prison population is high; depression, anxiety, substance use and psychotic disorders predominate. The importance of having mental health programmes in prisons, with initial diagnosis and personalized interventions, was observed. The authors recommend psychopharmacological interventions and cognitive behavioural management. Discussion: The need to restructure the mental health approach in prisons was evidenced, and early diagnosis and personalized follow-up should be guaranteed. Pharmacological intervention and, to a greater degree, cognitive behavioural therapy seem to be effective for these types of patients.

BackgroundSevere Mental Disorders have become a topic of increasing interest in research due to their serious consequences for the quality of life and functioning. In the pages that follow, it will be argued that the self-care ability and its influencing factors among patients with severe mental disorders in Beijing, according to the questionnaire survey in 2019.MethodsProportionate stratified sampling was used to select representative patients as samples. The demographic characteristics of were obtained from the Management Information System for Severe Mental Disorders and the questionnaires. The self-care ability was measured by self-made scales. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data.ResultsWe surveyed 662 people and found that the deficiency of self-care ability is common in patients with severe mental disorders. Self-care ability was positively correlated with educated levels and guardian takes care of alone, and negatively correlated with age, course of disease and physical disease (P < 0.05). From a dimensional perspective, the daily basic activity was positively correlated with educated levels and negatively correlated with physical disease (P < 0.05); the housework ability was positively correlated with gender, educated levels and medication adherence, and negatively correlated with source of income and physical disease (P < 0.05); the social function was positively correlated with educated levels, guardian takes care of alone and medication adherence, and negatively correlated with age, source of income, course of disease and physical disease (P < 0.05).ConclusionThe self-care ability of patients with severe mental disorders is affected by many factors, including patient characteristics and social factors. Therefore, targeted interventions are needed to help patients restore their self-care ability, which requires the joint efforts of the government and the whole society.

Objectives: The study presents an analysis of the risk for common mental disorders (CMDs) in populations with different levels of access to mental health care. Methods: We merged and statistically compared the representative data of prisoners to data collected from psychiatric clinics and the general population. Participants across all samples completed the General Health Questionnaire. Results: More than half of the inmates met the criteria for CMDs, while rates were 25% in the general population and 80% among psychiatric patients. The odds of prisoners being five times more likely to meet the criteria for CMDs were five times higher than the odds of the general population while controlling for demographic variables. Conclusions: The study highlights the need for prisoners for mental health services. Prisoners face stressful life conditions before and during incarceration while having limited access to medical and psychological treatment stresses the need for systemic interventions.
