The prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms and treatment-seeking behaviour in males over 40 years in Singapore: a community-based study

Abstract: The investigators thus conclude that LUTS is common in our population and has significant impact on QOL. However, <30% of patients with moderate-to-severe LUTS sought medical attention for symptoms. We believe that steps should be taken to increase public awareness and variability of treatment options to address this problem facing the growing number of elderly men in the population.

“…Consistent with other epidemiologic studies [3,4,20,23], our results demonstrate that LUTS are highly prevalent in men aged ≥40 years, and that prevalence increases with age. Among our population, 83.4% reported at least one LUTS (storage, voiding, or postmicturition symptom), and 30.2% reported experiencing all three symptoms.…”

“…(5) However, its prevalence increased to 14% and 16.5% in 2005 and 2012, respectively. (6,7) As male LUTS is significantly related to age, the findings are consistent with Singapore's ageing population. An autopsy study showed that the histological prevalence of BPH was 8%, 50% and 80% in the fourth, sixth and ninth decades of life, respectively.…”

“…Based on discussions within the team and evidence from the literature, a positive relationship was hypothesized between quality of life (as measured by the IPSS, AQoL‐4D and SF‐6D ) and being younger, being married/living with a partner, not having a history of illness, being a non‐smoker and higher self‐reported general health …”
